BODY MASS INDEX
Bombarded constantly by images in media, society today seems to be little bit obsessed with keeping
slim and fit. Although this attitude tends to get out hand, there are some very good reasons why you should
strive to maintain an ideal body weight. Being overweight or obese increases your risks of developing diabetes,
high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and other life-threatening conditions.
One way of determining whether you are overweight or not is through the Body Mass Index or BMI. It
is computed using the formula:
mass
BMI =
height 2
If your BMI is…. You are
less than 20 underweight
more than 20 but less than 25 within the healthy range
more than 25 but less than 30 overweight
more than 30 very overweight or obese

Assume that you are 18 years old. Calculate your BMI and find out whether you are within the
healthy range or not.

What Do You Want To Know?

based on Body Mass Index (BMI), am I in the healthy range of weight?

What Do You Think Will Happen?

Hypothesis_________________________________________________________________________________

What Do You Need?

meter stick or measuring tape sheet of newspaper
bathroom scale masking or scotchtape

How Do You Do It?

1. Stand on the bathroom scale and get your weight in pounds. Using the Factor-Label Method of conversion,
convert your weight in pounds to your mass in kilograms. (Hint: 1 kilogram=2.2 pounds)

2. Tape a sheet of newspaper on the wall at a distance above the floor which is about the same as your height.
Press your back to the wall, making sure the back of your head, shoulders and buttocks and heels are in contact
with the wall. Have a partner make a mark on the newspaper which indicates your height.

3. Determine your height in feet and inches using the measuring tape. Using the Factor-Label Method of
conversion, convert your height to meters. Then measure your height again, this time using the meter or
centimeter scale of the measuring tape. Do the two readings match?
4. Using your height in meters and your mass in kilograms, calculate your BMI.

5. Which range of the BMI scale do you fall in?

What Did You Find Out?

Weight = ___________ pounds
Mass = ___________ kilograms (show conversion solution)
Height = ___________ feet and ___________ inches
Height= ___________ meters show conversion solution)

Body Mass Index (show complete solution)

Your state of health = ______________________
