Safety glass for railway rolling stock GB 18045-2000

1 Scope
In this standard, types of and requirements on safety glass for railway rolling stock are specified.
This standard is applicable for safety glass for windows of railway rolling stock and locomotive.
2 Normative references
Some clauses included in the following standards will become clauses of this standard by quoting in this standard.
When this standard is issued, all issued editions are effective. All standards may be revised, and everyone used this
standard should manage to use the up-to-date edition of the following standards as possible.

3 Definitions
This standard adopts JC/T 632 definitions and the following definitions.
3.1 Tempered laminated glass
If in the laminated glass product made of more than two pieces of plate glass, at least one piece of those is tempered
glass, the product shall be called tempered laminated glass.
3.2 Insulated safety glass
The product made of two pieces or more of laminated glass or tempered glass which are arranged in parallel and with
even clearance between them, and the clearance is full of dry air with pressure about equal to external air or other gas
and sealed periphery.
3.3 Interlayer
The synthetic resin layer between the original plates of laminated glass is formed membrane state before
manufacturing the laminated glass or formed during the process of manufacture.
In additional, where binding agent and plastic agent etc are used, they are also included in the interlayer.
3.4 Datum edge
The lower edge when the glass is installed on the rolling stock.
3.5 Dew point
The temperature when dew or frost begins to appear on inside surface of insulated glass.

4 Class and designation


4.1 Class and designation of safety glass for railway rolling stock are indicated in Table 1.

4.2 designation demonstration


For the laminated glass with nominal dimensions of 900mm×700mm and thickness of 5.0mm, the designation

5 Requirements
According to different classes, safety glass should comply with the specification of corresponding clauses in Table 2.

Note: transmissivity and optic distortion are applicable to places where environment needs to be observed during running. The
transmissivity of color glass shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.

5.1 Requirements of tempered glass


5.1.1 Thickness
Thickness and permitted deviation of tempered glass should comply with the specification in Table 3.

5.1.2 Deviation of dimensions
5.1.2.1 The permitted deviation of dimensions of rectangle or square plane type tempered glass is listed in Table 4.
But it should be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer if complying with any clause of
the 1)~4)below.
1)when nominal thickness is 4mm,single piece area is above 1.8m2 or side length exceeds 1 800mm ;
2)when nominal thickness is 5mm or 6mm,single piece area is above 3.6m2 or side length exceeds 2 400mm ;
3)when nominal thickness is 8mm, 10mm or 12mm,single piece area is above 7.2m2 or side length exceeds
3 000mm ;
4)when nominal thickness is 15mm or 19mm 。
5.1.2.2 The permitted deviation of dimensions of the plane type and curved type tempered glass except for rectangle
or square is listed in Table 5. But it should be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer if
complying with any clause of the 1)~3)below.
1)when shape is plane type, and comply with any sub-clause of 1)、2)、3)and 4)of Clause 5.1.2.1 ;
2)when shape is curved type, nominal thickness is 4mm, 5mm or 6mm,side length exceeds 1 600mm or area exceeds
1.2m2;
3)when shape is curved type, nominal thickness is 8mm,side length exceeds 2200mm or area exceeds 2.0m2。
5.1.3 Degree of curvature
The degree of curvature for plane type tempered glass shall not exceed 0.3% in a bow and not exceed 0.2% in wave
shape.

5.1.4 Concordant degree

5.1.5 Appearance
The appearance quality of tempered glass is listed in Table 7.

Split edge For every 1 meter, at best permit 1 split edge with length below 10mm, width below

Pincers print The distance from the pincers print to the glass edge can not exceed 12mm.
Note: the central part, the surrounding part and the peripheral part are as the figure shows. But when the peripheral part superposes with
the central part, the superposed part shall be considered as peripheral part.

5.1.6 Transmissivity
Take 3 pieces of sample to test, and the transmissivity of every piece of sample must exceed 50%. And the transmissivity of color glass
shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
5.1.7 Optic distortion
Take 4 pieces of sample to test, and remove 150mm of the edge part. The maximum value of optic distortion of the prepared samples shall
be less than 6'.
5.1.8 Shock resistance
For the shock resistance of tempered glass, take 6 pieces of sample to test, and when the number of samples damaged doesn’t exceed 1
piece, the tempered glass shall be considered eligible; when it exceeds or equals 3 pieces, the tempered glass shall be considered ineligible;
when it equals 2 pieces, repeat the test with other 6 pieces of sample, and the tempered glass shall be considered eligible when the number
of samples damaged becomes 0.
5.1.9 Fragment state
For fragments of tempered glass, take 3 pieces of sample to test, and every piece of sample must meet requirements in Table 8.

The fragment number in a square of 50mm×50mm should be more than 40 .

including the above part, must exceed 160 .
5.2 Requirements of laminated glass
5.2.1 Thickness
The nominal thickness of laminated glass is the sum of nominal thickness of original glass pieces and nominal thickness of medium
membranes, and shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
The thickness and permitted deviation of laminated glass are listed in Table 9. But for curved type laminated glass, the laminated glass
including more than 3 pieces of glass, tempered laminated glass and the laminated glass with above 13mm nominal thickness, the
thickness and permitted deviation shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.

5.2.2 Deviation in dimensions
5.2.2.1 The permitted deviation in dimensions of rectangle and square plane type laminated glass is listed in Table 10.
But for the laminated glass including more than 3 pieces of glass, tempered laminated glass, the laminated glass with
above 13mm nominal thickness and the laminated glass with one side length more than 2 400mm , the deviation in
dimensions shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
5.2.2.2 The permitted deviation in dimensions of plane type laminated glass and curved type laminated glass except
for rectangle and square laminated glass is listed in Table 11. But for the laminated glass with more than 3 pieces of
original glass, the laminated glass with above 13mm nominal thickness and the laminated glass with one side length
more than 2 400mm, the permitted deviation in dimensions shall be determined through negotiation between the
supplier and the buyer.

5.2.3 Degree of curvature
The degree of curvature of plane type laminated glass can not exceed 0.2%, and that of tempered laminated glass
cannot exceed 0.3%.
5.2.4 Concordant degree
The concordant degree of curved type laminated glass is as showed in Table 12. For the laminated glass with more
than 3 pieces of original glass, the laminated glass with above 13mm nominal thickness and the laminated glass with
one side length more than 2 400mm, the concordant degree shall be determined through negotiation between the
supplier and the buyer.

5.2.5 Appearance
Except that requirements in Clause 5.1.5 should be met, the appearance quality of laminated glass should also meet
requirements in Table 13.

5.2.6 Transmissivity
Take 3 pieces of sample to test, and the transmissivity of every piece of sample must exceed 50%. And the transmissivity of color glass
shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
5.2.7 Optic distortion
Take 4 pieces of sample to test, and remove 150mm of the edge part. The maximum value of optic distortion of the prepared samples shall
be less than 6'.
5.2.8 Heat resistance
Take 3 pieces of sample to test. After testing, for every piece of sample, the crack is permitted to exist, but within the part 13mm beyond
the edge or crack, bubbles or other defects are not allowed to produce. For tempered laminated glass, curved type laminated glass and the
laminated glass with more than 3 pieces of original glass, heat resistance shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier
and the buyer.
5.2.9 Shock resistance
For shock resistance of laminated glass, take 6 pieces of sample to test, and when 5 pieces or above meet requirements of sub-clause 1)
and 2)below, the glass is eligible; when 3 pieces or below meet the requirements, the glass is ineligible; when 4 pieces meet the
requirements, add the other 6 pieces of sample to test, and when the all 6 pieces meet the requirements, the glass is eligible.
For tempered laminated glass, curved laminated glass and the laminated glass with more than 3 pieces of original glass, shock resistance
shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
1)Steel ball shall not penetrate samples;
2)Mass of stripped fragment from the opposite side of the shocked surface is below 20g.
5.2.10 Radiation stabile
Take 3 pieces of sample to test, the ratio of the transmissivity before irradiated by ultraviolet radiation to that after irradiated by ultraviolet
radiation shall be ≥95%. And when inspecting with white background, obvious changes (color change, bubbles, cloudy etc.) are not
allowed. If only 1 piece of sample complies with the requirement, the glass is ineligible. If 2 pieces of sample comply with the
requirement, add the other 3 pieces of sample to test, and if the 3 pieces of sample all comply with the requirement, the glass is eligible.
5.2.11 Penetration resistance
Take 6 pieces of sample to test, height of the falling ball is 4m, and after impacting, the steel ball shall not penetrate the sample within 5s.
If the 6 pieces of sample all meet the requirement, the glass is eligible; if 4 pieces and below meet the requirement, the glass is ineligible;
if 5 pieces meet the requirement, add the other 6 pieces of sample to test, and if the 6 pieces all meet the requirement, the glass is eligible.
5.3 Requirements of insulated safety glass
5.3.1 Thickness
Thickness of insulated safety glass is the sum of the nominal thickness of original pieces of glass and nominal thickness of the air layer,
and shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.
Permitted deviation of thickness of insulated safety glass is as showed in Table 14. But for the product with more than 2 air layers or the
product with original glass of which thickness of 1 piece exceeds 15mm, curved type insulated glass and the product with more than 2
pieces of laminated glass, the permitted deviation of thickness shall be determined through negotiation between the supplier and the
buyer.

5.3.2 Deviation in dimensions
5.3.2.1 The permitted deviation of length and width of rectangle and square insulated safety glass is as showed in Table 15. But for the
product with more than 2 200mm length and the product with more than 2 layers of air, the deviation shall be determined through
negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.

5.3.2.2 Permitted deviation in dimensions of insulated safety glass except for rectangle and square insulated safety glass is as showed in
Table 16. But for the product with more than 2200mm length or more than 2 layers of air, the permitted deviation in dimensions shall be
determined through negotiation between the supplier and the buyer.

5.3.3 Degree of curvature
Degree of curvature of plane type insulated safety glass shall not exceed 0.3%.
5.3.4 Concordant degree

5.3.5 Appearance
Except that the appearance quality requirement in Clause 5.1.5 and Clause 5.2.5 should be met, the appearance quality of insulated safety
glass should meet the requirement listed in Table 18.

Stain Stains on the surface facing sealed air are not allowed to affect

5.3.6 Dew point
Spot check of insulated safety glass shall be carried out as per Table 22. The minimum sample number is 5 pieces, and the dew point of
sealed air for every piece of insulated safety glass should below -40℃.
5.3.7 Acceleration durability
1)according to the test level of acceleration durability, classes are listed in Table 19.

2) Acceleration durability test of insulated safety glass
Take 6 pieces of sample and test according to Clause 6.3.7, and dew point of every piece of sample should below-35℃. During
testing, 2 pieces or below of sample are allowed to break, and they can be replaced by new samples, after replacing, the new samples
should be tested from the first step to the end of the whole test.
6 Test method
6.1 Thickness of insulated safety glass and the test method of dimensions
6.1.1 Determination of thickness
Measure the midpoint of every side of the glass with the micrometer complying with GB 1216 or instrument of similar precision, and the
arithmetical average of measured results is the thickness in mm and with two digits of decimal fraction.
6.1.2 Determination of dimensions
Use the length instrument with 1mm minimum scale to measure.
6.1.3 Determination of degree of curvature
Take the plane type product as a sample, and put it upright, then put a ruler complying with JB 2546 horizontally and fast contact with the
sample, use a cork gauge to measure the gap between the straight side of the ruler and the glass, and for an arch, express the degree of
curvature by the percentage of the height of arc to the length of chord; for waved shape, express the degree of curvature by the percentage
of the height from wave trough to wave crest to the distance from one wave crest to another wave crest nearby (or the distance from one
wave trough to another wave trough nearby).
6.1.4 Determination of concordant degree
For determination of concordant degree, take a curved type product as the sample, and put it on the testing mould showed in Figure 1, use
a cork gauge with 0.1mm precision to measure the clearance between the glass sample and the testing mould.

6.2 Test method of appearance of safety glass
Take a product as the sample, under good conditions of natural light or scatter light, make visual inspection from a distance of 500mm to
the glass surface. When measuring length and diameter of appearance defects, use a metal ruler with 0.5mm precision of scale and
complying with JB 2546 to measure.
6.3 Test method of basic characteristics
In tests of the following characteristics, samples used are all prepared with similar thickness, similar material and under similar
workmanship conditions to the product.
6.1.3 Transmissivity test
Take a product or test piece as the sample, and determine according to the method in GB/T 5137.2 .

Take a product as the sample, and determine according to the method in GB/T 5137.2 .
6.3.3 Oven-test
The sample is the laminated glass with dimensions of 300mm×300mm or so, and test shall be carried out as per the
method in GB/T 5137.3 .
6.3.4 Shock resistance test
6.3.4.1 Sample
The tempered glass or laminated glass with dimensions of 300mm×300mm .
6.3.4.2 Test installation
Use the sample support showed in Figure 2 and the installation which can make the steel ball fall free, and the steel
ball with glazed surface and 508g±3g mass (the diameter is about 50mm).
6.3.4.3 Test procedure
1)when the sample is laminated glass, it should be kept at least 4h at 23℃±2℃ temperature before testing. And for
tempered glass, the sample temperature shall be 20℃±15℃.
2)put the sample on the support horizontally, and at the contact part, use the rubber bar with Shore hardness A50 and
complying with GB/T 531 as the gasket.
The impacted surface is the outside surface when installed on the rolling stock. When testing curved type glass, the
corresponding auxiliary frame support is required.
3)make the steel ball fall free according to the height specified in Table 20, and the impact point should be within the
scope of 25mm from the sample center.
4)the impact for every sample is limited to only one time, and the result after impact should be observed.
When the sample is tempered glass, observe whether it is damaged or not;
When the sample is laminated glass, observe whether the steel ball penetrates it, and use a balance with 0.5g precision
to measure the total mass of fragments stripped from the opposite side of the impacted surface.

6.3.5 Fragment state test

6.3.5.1 Sample
Take from products.
6.3.5.2 Test installation
Exposal and blueprinting installation, and the hammer or punch pin with 0.2mm±0.05mm point curvature radius.
6.3.5.3 Test sequence
1)Put the sample onto the second sample with the same shape and dimensions, and locate the sensitive paper between
the two samplers, then use transparent adhesive tape to stick fast along the periphery.
2)at the place where is 20mm or so from the periphery within the central line of the longest side, use a small hammer
or a punch pin to impact and make the sample become broken.
3)the sensitive paper should begin to expose within 10s after impacting, and finish the exposal within 3min after
impacting.
4)after blueprinting, remove the part of 20mm of the periphery and the part within the scope of 75mm from the
impact point, and choose the part with maximum fragments from the picture, use the count frame of 50mm×50mm to
count number of fragments within the frame. For the fragment across the edge of the count frame, take the number as
0.5. When fragments within the count frame are less than 40, use the count frame of 100mm×100mm , and count
number of fragments within the frame including the above part.
6.3.6 Dew point test
6.3.6.1 Sample
Dimensions of the sample are 350mm×500mm.
6.3.6.2 Test installation
Use the container made of steel plates showed in Figure 3 and a bar-shaped thermometer(the scale is 1℃,and the
measurement scope is +30~-70℃)or the temperature indicator with the same or above precision.
6.3.6.3 Test procedure
1)before testing, keep the sample above 24h in the environment of 23℃±2℃ temperature.
2)put ethanol or acetone into the container until top of A surface, then add dry ice or other refrigeration medium, and
keep the temperature during the test process.
3)put the sample upright, determine any testing location and clean it with cloth, apply a coat of ethanol or acetone on
A surface of the container (A surface is the central part of ah surface),and then put the sample closely contact the
surface and keep a period as specified in Table 21.
4)move the container away from the location, and within 30s, use a hand to wipe off the frost attached on the glass
surface swiftly, and immediately observe whether the dew or frost appears on inside surface of the sample.

6.3.7 Acceleration durability test
1)sample
Use the same sample as that used in Clause 6.3.6.1 .
2)test installation
Wet fastness and light fastness test equipment and cold-hot circulation test equipment.
3)test procedure
Begin the test after determining the dew point by means of Clause 6.3.6 , the testing process is as follows:
a)Class Ⅰtest method specified in Table 19: after wet fastness and light fastness test 7d and continuous cold-hot
circulation test 12 times, use the method of Clause 5.3.6 to determine the dew point.
b) Class Ⅱtest method specified in Table 19: continue the test process of sub-clause a), and again after wet fastness
and light fastness test 7d and continuous cold-hot circulation test 12 times, use the method of Clause 6.3.6 to
determine the dew point.
c) Class Ⅲ test method specified in Table 19: continue the test process of sub-clause b), and again after wet fastness
and light fastness test 7d and continuous cold-hot circulation test 48 times, use the method of Clause 6.3.6 to
determine the dew point.
4)wet fastness and light fastness test
Put the sample into the trough with constant temperature and humidity at 55℃±3℃ temperature and above 95%
relative humidity, as demonstrated in Figure 4. Then use ultraviolet radiation fluorescent lamps FL40BL and FL40BL
to irradiate the adhesive surface of the glass and the sealing material, and take the distance from the axes of the
fluorescent lamp to the glass surface as 50mm±3mm. Then use a continuous recorder to record the temperature and
humidity at the location with average temperature and humidity inside the trough. The total lighting time of the
fluorescent lamp will be 5 150h and the lamp is required to be replaced.

5) Cold-hot repeated test
Put the sample into the trough with constant temperature as showed in Figure 5, and use a continuous recorder to
record the temperature at the location with average temperature inside the trough, after keeping 1h at -20℃±3℃
temperature, keep another 1h at 50℃±3℃ temperature, take this as 1 time of circulation, and the circulation number
should comply with the specification in sub-clause 3).

6.3.8 Radiation stabile test


The laminated glass with the sample of 76mm×300mm shall be tested according to GB/T 5137.3 .
6.3.9 Penetration resistance
The laminated glass with the sample of 300mm×300mm shall be tested according to GB/T 5137.1.
7 Inspection rule
7.1 Classes of inspection
Inspections include factory inspection and type inspection.
7.1.1 Factory inspection: inspection items include thickness, dimension deviation, appearance, degree of curvature,
concordant degree, and dew point. If other inspection items are required, they should be agreed by the supplier and the
buyer.
7.1.2 Type inspection: inspection items should be items covered by all technical requirements of this sort of product
specified by this standard.
In case of one of the following conditions, type inspection should be carried out.
a) the trial manufacture and design-finalizing appraisal for the new product or old product production in a new
factory;
b) after formal production, when the structure, material and workmanship have great changes and may affect the
product performance;
c) after normal production, and periodically or after accumulating certain quantity of products, make periodical
inspection;
d) after long term stop of production, when resuming the production;
e) when great difference between factory inspection result and the last type inspection result;
f) when the National Quality Supervision Authority requires to carry out the type inspection.
7.2 Lot establishment and sampling rule
7.2.1 For tests of thickness, dimension deviation, appearance, degree of curvature, concordant degree and dew point of
the product, carry out random sampling according to the specification of Table 22 . If the lot scope of dew point test is
less than 15 pieces, at least take 5 pieces to test.

7.2.2 For other technical performances required for the product, if use the product to test, make random sampling from
the lot of products according to numbers required by inspection items. If use samples to test, adopt samples prepared
under the same workmanship conditions. When the quantity of this lot of products is more than 500 pieces, take every
500 pieces as one lot, and sampling by lots. When the inspection item is nondestructive test, we can proceed to inspect
other items.
7.3 Judgment rule
When the unconformity number of products in thickness, dimension deviation, appearance, degree of curvature,
and concordant degree is more than or equal the judgment number of unconformity specified in Table 22, thickness,
dimension deviation, appearance, degree of curvature and concordant degree of this lot of products should be
considered ineligible. And other performances should comply with the corresponding clauses in Section 5, otherwise
the product should be considered ineligible.
Among the above various items, if one item is ineligible, this lot of products should be considered ineligible.
8 Packing, mark, transportation and storage
8.1 Packing
Products should be packed with containers or wooden boxes. And every piece of glass should be packed with
paper or take other protection measures. The gap between glass and the package box should be filled with soft
material not easily to scratch and damage glass. The concrete requirements are specified in JC/T 512 .
8.2 Mark
Marks should comply with relevant stipulations in JC/T 512. On external part of every package box, “face upside,
be careful to put slightly” etc. words and glass thickness, sort, factory name or brand should be clearly printed.
8.3 Transportation
Products should be transported by various types of vehicles. The handling rule and conditions etc. should comply
with relevant stipulations in JC/T 512 .
When transporting, glass is not allowed to be laid horizontally or in an inclined state, and the direction in length
should be the same direction as the transportation direction of the vehicle. And weatherproof measures should be
taken.
8.4 Storage
Products should be stored in a dry room upright.
