1. Define what are the nutritional requirements of school children.(age 7-12 years old)
The daily recommended caloric intake for children 11 to 12 years range between
1800 and 2200 kcal/day. 7 and 8 years old children need 60 to 65 kcal/kg/day and
9+ needs 35 to 45 kcal/kg/day. School-aged children should have much less fats,

sugar and salt in their diet. They should also eat more foods containing fiber, such
as cereals, whole-grain breads, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Fruit should
also not be used as a replacement for vegetables as they contain different
nutrients. To be specific, 7-12 years old children should have 5-6 serving/day of
brown rice and whole meal bread, 2 serving/day of fruits, 2 serving/day of
vegetables, 3 servings of meat and others, and 1 serving of dairy or calcium-
containing food.
2. Define what is the Recommended Dietary Allowance and state the recommended
average energy requirement of this age group.
Boys:
7-9 years old
1650 kcal, 289g carbohydrates, 39g proteins, 58g total fats, 21g dietary fibre, 400
mg of vitamin a, 0.84mg vitamin b1, 1.26 mg vitamin b2, 20mg vitamin c, 2.5mg

7-12 years old children should have 5-6 serving/day of brown rice and whole meal
bread, 2 serving/day of fruits, 2 serving/day of vegetables, 3 servings of meat and
others, and 1 serving of dairy or calcium-containing food. My healthy plate
encourages to to eat a quarter of brown rice and wholemeal bread, quarter of
meat and others and half a plate of fruits and vegetables. An example of a
balanced meal is 2 bowls of porridge (500g), 150 g of raw leafy vegetables, 1
medium banana, 3 eggs (150 g).
4. According to dietary guidelines for children, what are some useful tips on how you
can achieve a balanced diet.
More calcium, vitamin D and protein should be included in a diet which will help
you in achieving a balanced diet. It is good to eat fruits and vegetables as they are
a source of vitamin and minerals.
5. List some cooking methods that are suitable for food on sale at the carnival. Give 2
examples of suitable food and explain.
Some cooking methods that are suitable for food at the carnival are deep frying,
baking, grilling and frying. Deep frying is a cooking method in which food is
submerged in hot fat, traditionally lard but now most commonly oil. Baking is a
method of cooking that uses dry heat in an enclosed space. Grilling is a form of
cooking that involves heat applied to the surface of food. Pizza is made by baking
in a pan with a high edge that holds in a layer of toppings. Corn dogs are made by
deep frying and it is a sausage coated with a thick layer of cornmeal batter.
