JOSE RIZAL RIZAL’S PARENTS

 June 19, 1861 – birth date of Jose Rizal Francisco Mercado Rizal
 He was born in the lakeshore of Calamba,
Laguna at about midnight on Wednesday of his  Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado y Alejandra II

MEANINGS OF NAME THE RIZAL CHILDREN

Jose - was chosen by his mother who was a devotee of The marriage of Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora
the Christian saint San Jose (St. Joseph) Alonso Realonda was blessed with eleven children –
nine girls and two boys. These children were:
Protacio - from Gervacio P. which come from a Christian
calendar SATURNINA – She was the oldest among Rizal children
who was nicknamed Neneng. She studied in La
Mercado- adopted in 1731 by Domingo Lamco (the Concordia College in Sta. Ana, Manila. She married
paternal great great-grandfather of Jose Rizal) which the Manuel T. Hidalgo, a native of Tanawan, Batangas.
Spanish term mercado means, “market” in English
PACIANO – He was the older brother whom Rizal called
Rizal - from the word “Ricial‟ in Spanish means a field “Uto” and his second father. He accompanied Rizal
where wheat, cut while still green, sprouts again when he enrolled in schools. Enraged by the
GOMBURZA execution and the sentiments of his
Alonzo- old surname of his mother younger brother Jose, he joined the Philippine
Revolution and became a combat general. After the

OLIMPIA – she was the third girl among the children.


Her pet name was YPIA. She married Silvestre Ubaldo, a
telegraph operator from Manila.

LUCIA – she was the fifth child. She married Mariano Domingo Lameo – great-great grandfather– A Chinese
Herbosa of Calamba. He died of Cholera and was denied immigrant from Chang chow “China’s City of Spring”, he
Christian burial because he was a brother-in-law of Jose was married to Ines De la Rosa
Rizal.
1731 – he adopt the name “Mercado” meaning market
CONCEPCION – her pet name was CONCHA. She died
when she was only three years old (1862-1865). Her Francisco Mercado – Domingo Lameo’s son
death brought grief to the whole family. That was the
first sorrow Jose had experienced. Juan Mercado – Francisco’s son, married to Cirila
Alejandro
JOSEFA – she was called PANGGOY by the family. She
died an old maid at age 80. Francisco Mercado – Rizal’s father (son of Juan
Mercado)
TRINIDAD – her pet name was TRINING. Like her sister
Josefa, Trining never married and died an old maid at ANCESTRY MATERNAL SIDE
age 83.
Lakan Dula – descendant
SOLEDAD – CHOLENG was her pet name and the
youngest among the eleven children. She married Eugenio Ursua – great-great grandfather of Rizal – he
Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba. was married to Benigna

Regina – daughter of Eugenio, married to Manuel De


Quintos

Brigida – daughter of Regina, married to Lorenzo


Alberto, mother of Narcisa, Teodora, Gregorio, Jose and
Manuel

Rizal – “racial”; meaning “new pasture” and “green


field”
