The roots of a Civilization are not limited to a language or culture alone. It is perhaps embedded mostly
within the soul of its buildings and architecture. Most of them stand the test of times and show us what
exactly is the age's spirit.

Let us meet the architects of Indian Architecture, who has garnered world renown. These masters crafted
wonders in stone and cement and showcased India's majestic and proud edifices to the world.

1) BV Doshi

B V Doshi is one of India's greatest architects. The first Indian to receive the prestigious Pritzker
Architecture Prize and is also a recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhusan.

He had worked closely with architectural legends such as Le Corbusier, Anant Raje and Louis Kahn. He
also received the famous OAL or Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France for his exemplary works. His
studio was called "Vastu-Shilpa" in Delhi and was a Brutalist and Modernist architecture pioneer in India.

2) Laurie Baker

The Gandhi of Architecture, Laurie Baker, is known to be one of the most famous architects in India. The
legendary architect was known for his unique style of combining low-cost materials and regional
practices to craft organic buildings that blended seamlessly into the background.

He mostly worked for low to middle class households, creating marvels out of the traditional raw
materials. He has been awarded Padma Shri, MBE, UN Roll of Honor etc.

3) Sheila Sri Prakash

Sheila Sri Prakash is a multitalented veteran among Indian architects. She was the first Indian woman to
start her own architectural practice in the country.

With over 1200 projects to her name, she is considered one of the most influential female architects in the
globe.

4) Brinda Somaya

Brinda Somaya is known for astounding vernacular architecture. The only woman to ever win a
Wienerberger Golden Architect Lifetime Award, Brinda Somaya started the foundation of her firm at her
own backyard. She is also popular as an urban conservationist.

5) Charles Correa

Charles Correa is perhaps one of the most famous architects in Modern India. He is known for
introducing modern and post-modern architectural marvels to the post-independent India. His oeuvre
consists of a wide variety from low-cost housing to high rise buildings. He received both Padma Shri and
Padma Vibhushan.

6) Hasmukh Patel

Hasmukh Patel is one of India's best-known architects, who was an inevitable part of post-independence
architecture along with Charles Correa, Anant Raje, Achyut Kanvinde. His works became the symbols of
India's growth as a young and ambitious nation, and he was also one of the major forces behind the
growth of CEPT.

7) Raj Rewal

Raj Rewal is one of the top architects in India, who has designed various public, housing, and institutional
buildings.

He was known for his one of a kind style that portrayed buildings much more than a few bricks, and he
elevated them into urban narratives, which brought out deeper meanings of culture, geometry and rhythm.

8) Achyut Kavinde

Achyut Kavinde is an uncomparable aesthete of Indian Architecture. He was known for his functionalist

crowd. He was also a great believer of Vastu Shastra. He was awarded the Padma Shri.

9) Anant Raje

Anant Raje is yet another titan of Indian Architecture and design. A student of Louis Khan, his works
reflected the vernacular styles and also was a proponent of modern fusion with Traditional elements.

10) Bimal Patel

One of the most sought after contemporary architects of our time, Bimal Patel was born in Gujarat and is
the President of CEPT. His exemplary works in Indian urban planning and design is rooted in vernacular
aesthetics. He is also a recipient of Padma Shri.

11) Hafeez Contractor

Hafeez Contractor is known for designing skyscrapers and the three tallest towers in India - 42 in
Kolkata, Twin Towers of Imperial in Mumbai. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award and always
brings glitz and glamour into the field.

12) Nari Gandhi


Nari Gandhi was known for his highly innovative works in organic architecture that blended elements
unique to India with the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright. [11] He developed an integrated architectural
style that considered the local climate, tropical lifestyle, and artisanship in collaboration with the
craftsmen and masons on site. [11] Labor-intensive methods were intrinsic to his work, which showed a
refined sense of materials with an extraordinary use of clay, stone, brick, wood, glass, and leather.Major

13) Christopher Charles Benninger

is one of India's highly decorated architects. His award-winning projects are, The Mahindra United World
College of India, The Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, The Suzlon One Earth world headquarters,
The National Ceremonial Plaza at Thimphu, Bhutan and India House.

14) Rahul Mehrotra

Rahul Mehrotra is considered one of the best Indian architects of our time. He is both an
educator and one of the founders of Kala Ghoda Rejuvenation Movement. He is also a member
of IIHS or Indian Institute for Human Settlement.
