Zika “World Cup theory” dismissed
The Zika virus arrived in South America a year before the
2014 World Cup in Brazil, say British and Brazilian scientists.
Their study effectively dismisses one of the most popular
theories about the outbreak’s origins – that it was brought over
by football fans. The findings, published in the journal Science,
suggest the virus arrived between May and December 2013.
That is long before any cases were first detected in 2015.
The other popular idea – that it was brought over during the
World Sprint Championship canoe race in 2014 – has also
been dismissed.

Case zero
Tracing the origins of a virus takes a feat of genetic
genealogy. The researchers analysed the genetic code of seven
Zika samples from across Brazil. First, they discovered all of
the viruses were closely related, suggesting the infection was
brought to Brazil by just one person. The virus has since spread
to 34 countries or territories. But Zika is still a virus that mutates
rapidly. The small differences between each sample allowed
the scientists to construct Zika’s family tree and estimate when
their common ancestor arrived in Brazil. They conclude that
the virus was brought over in mid-to-late 2013.

Foreign aid is vital – just look at how Britain has helped in Indonesia
We have all been moved this week by the harrowing images coming out of Indonesia, following the country’s devastating
earthquake and tsunami.
But amid all the chaos and heartbreak, the UK, along with the international aid community, has been working tirelessly to
help the vulnerable survivors.
Tens of thousands of Indonesians are without shelter and in need of food and water, the basics we in the UK all take for granted.
On Thursday the Department for International Development sent a plane loaded with UK aid from the UK to Indonesia.
On board were shelter kits and solar lanterns, very practical and essential items that will make a very real and immediate difference
to those on the ground. This essential kit was paid for out of the UK’s aid budget. Another plane with UK aid flew from the Middle
East to Indonesia this week, carrying similar gear, as well as hygiene kits, containing toothpaste and soap, and other essentials.
These are just some of the ways UK aid is making a very real difference in Indonesia right now. We are also providing expertise.
A team of seven humanitarian workers is currently in Indonesia, helping the country cope with its immediate crisis.

Naloxone: a take-home antidote to drug overdose that
saves lives
Globally, an estimated 69,000 people die each year from
opioid overdose alone. Among people who inject drugs, opioid
overdose is the second most common cause of death after HIV
/ AIDS.
New World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, released
on 4 November 2014, aim to reduce the number of opioid related
deaths globally. The guidelines recommend countries expand
naloxone access to people likely to witness an overdose in their
community, such as friends, family members, partners of people
who use drugs, and social workers. In most countries, naloxone
is currently accessible only through hospitals and ambulance
crews who may not manage to get help to the people who need
it fast enough.
Naloxone has been used in the management of opioid
overdose for more than 40 years. It is a safe drug with a low risk
of serious side effects. According to the guidelines, any adult
capable of learning basic life support can also learn to recognize
an opioid overdose and administer naloxone in time to save lives.

Study finds high cellphone use may lead to ADHD in teens
Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is on the
rise. A new study suggests that the more teens check social
media, stream video, text or simply use their phones, the
more likely they are to develop symptoms of ADHD. ADHD
symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity and restlessness
that is more frequent than normal.
At its start, the 10th graders in the study had none of those
symptoms. For two years the teens kept track of their digital
use and those ADHD behaviors. The results, just published
in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found
a “statistically significant but modest association” between
the two. 45 percent of the study adolescents admitted to
being online “almost constantly.” The researchers say it’s
the “always-on” nature of mobile devices and their frequent
notifications, constantly drawing teens’ attention that may be
behind the increase in ADHD symptoms.
Total screen time, TV and video games for example, did
not correlate with increased ADHD because they don’t draw
and demand attention the way phones do.
