HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLAND

NATIVES IN THE ISLAND OF LUZON

People:
 With dark skin but more on black in color
 Men and women have wooly hair or curly hair
 They are robust but their stature are not that great
 Their clothing for men are short collarless garments sewed together in the front in blue
or black
 For the chief in RED called chinanas
 They whore strip of colored cloth wraped about the waist and between their legs to
cover their private parts going halfway below the thigh called banaques.
 They go bare foot.
 Their head is uncovered, wrapping a narrow cloth called protong.
 They wear gold necklaces linked in fashion armlets called calombigas.
 Some are larger than the others depending on status.
 Some have stones embedded on their necklaces, colors blue and white which they
esteem highly. And some of then were it around the legs covered in black pitch in
many foldings as garter.
Characteristics:
 They are barbarians
 They are much more of killing and attacking the settlements of the other native
House:
 No fixed houses
 They wander in bands and hordes through the mountains and rough country
 Changing from one site to another according to the season
Food
 They support themselves by planting rice which they are very good,
 Root crops and honey from the mountain.
Lineages of lordship/chief
 Inherited in the male line by succession of father and son and their descendants.
 If there were no son, the other relative succeeded.
 Their duty is to rule and govern their subjects and followers and assist them with their
need.
 If the chief is good at governing, he receives a lot of things from his followers from
food down to wars and voyages.
 They also give tributes to their chief called buiz.
 If youre a relative of the chief, you will also be respected like the chief.
 Common people are called timaguas/plebians

Slaves
 2 kinds of slaves
 Sagigilid- served inside the house of their master and also their family.
 Namamahay- these are slave who are living outside their master house and called
whenever they are needed.
 These slaves have no pay or stipend
 And their children and descendants will also be slaves.
 But there are instances that there is also a half slave and ¼ slave
 Half-slaves- is when the father or mother is free and the other is not
 If they have 2 children, the eldest will follow the father and the bunso will follow the
mother regardless on who is free
 If they have odd number of children, the eldest will follow the father, the 2nd will
follow the mother, and the 3rd will be a half-slaves.
 Their generation will be ¼ slaves either sagigilid or namamahay.
 Either way… the half slaves and ¼ slaves will still serve their master every other
month in respect to the condition of slavery.
 If you want to buy a sagigilid slave it cost 10 good golds or 80 pesos. And namamahay
slaves are half.
Marriages:
 The marriages of the natives are very common.
 Chief with women chief
 Timaguas with those of that ranks
 Slaves with other slaves.
 They considered 1 woman whom they married. But they can have as many wives as
they want but they are not considered as family even though they have a children from
that other family.
 If the chief had another woman. The line would still be in his 1st wife. And the 2nd wife
will not be given anything.
 They are also practicing dowry, wherein they will give animals or land or gold to the
wifes parents.
 Adulteries were not punished corporally. But will pay the party the amount agreed
upon both patries. And the injury was pardon and the husband will retain his honor.
He will still live with his wife and no further talk about the matter.
 Single men are called bagontaos, while girls are called dalagas
 They are also practicing arrange marriage, where in they are betrothed since they were
a baby.

Loans:
 Buying of golds
 Bartering of goods
 Excessive debts will be paid by food, lands, animals or slavery
Doctors:
 They have herbalist
 Witches
 Sorcerers
 They believe on this things and they sacrifice anything that these doctors will say
 They will give everything that the doctors need
 Even though it is not true, they will do it for the sake of healing.
God:
 Native worship gods
 They worship animals
 They worship the sun or the moon
 They are kneeling down and clasping their hands so that no harm will be in them.
 They have idols that they worship
