1.OTTIS MEDIA

CHARACTERISTS

This is the inflammation of the mucus membranes of the middle ear. Which may also involve
inflammation of mastoid and Eustachian tube. . Acute Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle
ear space with a rapid onset of the signs and symptoms of acute injection namely fever and oltagia. If
the middle ear becomes contaminated with bacteria, pus and pressure in the middle ear can result an it
is called acute bacterial otitis media.

ETIOLOGIC AGENTS
The common causative organisms are: virus; Haemophillus influenza &
:Bacteria;streptococcus pneumonei

MODE OF TRANSMISION
It is commonly diagnosed in formula fed infants than breast fed infants because breast milk contains
secretory immunoglobulin A wc limits the exposure of the eustachian tube & middle ear mucosa to
microbial pathogens.Acute otitis media is caused by a bacteria called streptococcus pneumonia

SPECIMEN

Ear dischage(pus)

LABORATORY TESTS
Culture and sensitivity- if there is purulent discharge, culture and sensitivity should be done to
identify specific causative organisms.

3.OTOMYCOSIS

This is an infection of the outer ear caused by fungus. It is characterized by malodorous


discharge, imflamation, pruritis,flaky skin scaling and severe discomfort. It is caused by
aspergillus niger. There is presence of greyish white thick debris and heaviness in the ear. The
fungal mass appears black headed filamentous growth or creamy deposit. Speciment usd for
tests is debris. It is diagonized by otoscopy, swab .
