UNDERSTANDING THE COURSE

1. Aims of the course

• To deepen students’ understanding of the pedagogical implementation


of foreign language curricula;

• To provide students with opportunity to reflect on real teaching practices,


lesson plans, and teaching materials;

• To help students develop classroom management skills, taking into


account issues including big or multi-level classes and issues involved in
the application and adaptation of ideas about methodology to
contemporary EFL teaching in Vietnam.
UNDERSTANDING THE COURSE

2. Focus: the teacher and his/her teaching


Our study naturally involves reading the literature, including general points
on FL learning and teaching. However, your particular experience will be a
focal part of your study. You will be encouraged to relate this to what you
read – as follows:

professional experience, formal education, research,


current practice / policies

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, trainees are expected to be able to:

- Understand practical issues in language teaching,

- Apply language teaching theories into practice,

- Develop classroom management skills and deal with various situational


problems in the contemporary Vietnam effectively;

- Select, adopt and adapt, and create materials and resources relevant for their
teaching context, and

- Identify, select and apply various and appropriate principles and techniques
in teaching vocabulary, grammar, and the four language skills (speaking,
listening, reading and writing) at communication and discourse levels.

1. Group presentation

Ò each group (of 4 members) will be required to


prepare an oral presentation of an EFL
teaching practice issue.
Ò All group members should take their roles in
the preparation and presentation.
Ò 15 minutes, and a Q&A section should be
organised from 5 to 10 minutes.
Ò Oral presentations that exceed the time limit
will be penalised.

Topic 7: Motivational strategies in EFL Classrooms (Group 4 &

Topic 8: Teaching strategies and techniques (Group 6 & 7)
Topic 9: Classroom management (Group 8 & 9)
2. Lesson plan and Micro-teaching (Pair
work)
Ò It is up to the pair to choose what lesson to
teach to what kind of students they would like
to have within 15 minutes each.
Ò (A lesson plan and handouts and/or electronic
materials for the micro-teaching are asked to
submit a week before the teaching).
Ò Although each member will be graded
separately, an average mark will be given to the
pair for pairwork is highly concerned in this
course.
3. Classroom Observation and Evaluation

Ò You are encouraged to observe as many EFL


classrooms as possible to practise analysing
the practical English teaching.
Ò A report you observe together with an
evaluation (3,000 +/- 300 words for evaluation
plus references) of the practical teaching of
ONE of these classes are asked to submit to
the instructor two weeks after the course (no
later than 5:00pm.)
Ò APA style is required for all written
assignments.
Ò Papers will be checked for plagiarism on
Turnitin.com.
Ò Any paper with plagiarism or without school
cover page and/or references will not be
graded.
Ò Methods of classroom observation and
evaluation will be discussed in the class and
are consulted during the course.
All assignments:

Ò Use APA 6th style referencing.


Ò Use at least 5 sources in your reference list. Include only
sources to which you have referred in your text. Your reference
list must be typed on a new page.
Ò Your assignment should be an argument: make your argument
clear in the introduction and use your references/sources and
personal experience to support your argument. It is acceptable
to express your personal opinion in the assignment but this
should be supported by evidence (e.g. from your experience,
references to the literature).
Assignments:

Ò Assignments to be typed in Times New Roman font size 13, and


with double spacing, one-sided.
Ò Assignments must have a cover page which includes your
name, ID and email address; the exact title of the assignment
and the lecturer’s name. (sample to be provided later).
Ò Assignments are to be sent electronically to
binhnth@hcmue.edu.vn and as hard copies on the respective
due dates.
