<1+> B. JOHN THE APOSTLE BEGINNING OF THE APOCALYPSE

[Chap. I.] The Apocalypse of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to reveal to his servants, what
must be done quickly: and he signified it, sending by his angel to his servant John. , who
reads and [Ms. and who] hears the words of the prophecy [Ms. of this book: and he keeps
those things which are written in it: for the time is near. John to the seven churches; which
are in Asia. Grace to you and peace from him who is, and who was, and who is to come; and
from the seven spirits who are before his throne; and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful
witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth; who loved us, and
washed us from our sins in his own blood, and made us a kingdom and priests to God and
his Father: to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming with
clouds, and every eye will see him, And all the tribes of the earth mourn over him: Yes:
Amen. I am Α and Ω, the beginning and the end, says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and
who is to come, almighty. I, John, your brother and partner in tribulation, and in the
kingdom, and in patience in Christ Jesus, I was in the island which is called Patmos, because
of the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus [Ms. add. Christi]. I was in the spirit on
Sunday, and I heard behind me a great voice like a trumpet, saying: What you see, write in a
book: and send to the seven churches which are in Asia, Ephesus, and Smyrna, and
Pergamum, and Thyatira , and Sardis, and Philadelphia, and Ladodice. And I turned to see
the voice that spoke with me. and his hair was as white as white wool, and as snow, and his
eyes were like a flame of fire, and his feet were like gold, as in a burning furnace, and his
voice was like the voice of many waters: and he had in his right hand seven stars: and from
out of his mouth came a sharp sword on each side: and his face was like the sun shining in
his power. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as if dead. alive, and I was dead; and behold,
I am alive forever and ever, and I have the keys of death and of hell. Write therefore what
you saw, and what are, and what must be done after these things. The sacrament of the
seven stars, which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks: seven stars
the angels are of the seven churches: and the candlesticks are seven, there are seven
churches. and your patience, and because you cannot bear evil: and you have tempted those
who say they are apostles, and are not: and you have found them liars: and you have
patience, and you have endured for my name's sake, and you have not failed. But I have [Ms.
add something] against thee, because thou hast left thy first charity. Remember therefore
whence thou art cut off: and do penance, and do the first works. the deeds of the Nicolaitans,
which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. lives:
I know your trouble [Ms. silent your] and your poverty, but you are rich: and you are
blasphemed by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Fear nothing of these things that you are going to suffer. Behold, the devil is going to send
some [Ms. silent some] of you into prison, that you may be tempted: and you shall have
tribulation for ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. Write to
the church: These things says he who has a razor sharp on both sides: I know where you
live, where the seat of Satan is: and you hold my name, and you have not denied my faith.
And in those days Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed among you where Satan
lives. But I have a few things against you: because you have there those who hold the
doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to send a stumbling block before the children of
Israel, to eat and commit fornication: so you also have those who hold the doctrine of the

fire, and his feet are like unto gold: I know thy works, and thy faith, and thy charity, and thy
service, and thy patience, and thy last works, and many more But I have a few things against
you: because you allow the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and
seduce my servants to commit fornication and eat idolatrous food. and those who commit
adultery with her will be in the greatest tribulation, unless they have done penance from
their works. I will go to each of you according to his works. But I say to you, and to the rest
who are in Thyatira: Those who do not have this doctrine, and who have not known the
depths of Satan, as they say, I will not put another burden on you: nevertheless, hold on to
what you have until I come. And he that conquereth, and keepeth my works unto the end, I
will give him power over the nations, and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, and they
shall be broken as a potter's vessel, even as I also received from my Father: and I will give
him the morning star. He that hath an ear, let him hear. what the Spirit says to the Churches.
[Chap. 3.] And to the angel of the Church of Sardis write: These things says he who has the
seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your works, because you have a name that
you live, and you died. Be vigilant, and strengthen the rest. which were about to die. For I do
not find your works complete before my God. Keep in mind, then, how you received, and
you will be heard, and keep, and do penance. But you have a few names in Sardis, who have
not defiled their garments: and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. And to the angel of the
church of Philadelphia, write: These things says the Holy One and the True One, who has the
key of David: who opens, and no one shuts: he closes, and no one opens: I know your works.
Behold, I have opened the door before you , which no one can close: because a little [Ms.
little] thou hast courage, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Behold, I
will give [Ms. to thee] of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews, and are not, but lie.
Behold, I will cause them to come and worship before thy feet: and they shall know that I
have loved thee. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, and I will keep thee from
the hour of the temptation which is coming to the whole world to tempt those who dwell on
the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your
crown. mine, and the name of the city of my God [Ms. tac. of my God] of the new Jerusalem,
which comes down from heaven from my God, and my name is new. He who has an ear, let
him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. the beginning of God's creation. I know your
works, because you are neither cold nor hot: I wish you were cold or hot: but because you
are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will begin to spew you out of my mouth. Because
you say: I am rich, and rich, and I have no need of anyone: and you do not know that you are
wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. and anoint thine eyes with
eyedrops, that thou mayest see. with him, and he with me. He that overcometh, I will give
him to sit with me on my throne: yes that I also lived and sat down with my Father on his
throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. and the first
voice that I heard was like a trumpet speaking to me, saying: Come up here, and I will show
you what must be done after these things. And immediately I was in the spirit: and behold, a
seat was placed in heaven, and one sitting on the seat. And he who sat, like it was of the
appearance of a jasper and sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the seat,
like a vision of emerald. , and voices, and thunders: and seven lamps burning before the
throne, which are the seven spirits of God. the first like a lion, and the second animal like a
calf, and the third animal having a face like a man's, and the fourth animal like a flying eagle.
, and inside they were full of eyes: and they had no rest day and night, saying: Holy, Holy,
Holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come. And when they gave
those animals glory, and honor, and blessing to him who sits on the throne, who lives
forever and ever; the twenty-four elders fell down before him sitting on the throne, and
worshiped him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
You are worthy, Lord our God, to receive glory, honor, and power: for you created all things,
and because of your will they were, and they were created. I heard] a strong angel,
preaching with a loud voice: Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose its seals? it was
found worthy to open the book, and not to see him. And one of the elders said to me: Do not
weep: behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, won to open the book and to
loose its seven seals. And I saw: and behold, in the middle of the throne and four animals ,
and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing as if slain, having seven horns and seven
eyes: which are the seven spirits of God, sent into all the earth. and the twenty-four elders
fell before the Lamb, each having lyres, and golden bowls full of spices, which are the
prayers of the saints: and they sang a new song, saying: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive
the book, and to open its seals: to whom You were slain, and you redeemed us to God in
your blood from every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation: and you made us a
kingdom and priests to our God: and we shall reign over the earth. and animals, and elders:
and there was a number of them [Ms. silent their] thousands of thousands, saying with a
loud voice: Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom,
and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. And every creature that is in heaven, and
on earth, and under the earth, and what is in the sea, and what is in it. and power for ever
and ever. And the four animals said: Amen. And the twenty-four elders fell on their faces:
and they worshiped him that liveth for ever and ever. animals, saying [Ms. add to me], as if I
heard a voice of thunder: Come, and see. , saying: Come and see. And another red horse
came out: and it was given to him that sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that they
should kill one another [Ms. they would kill]: and a great sword was given to him. And when
he had opened the third seal, I heard the third animal saying: Come and see. four talking
animals; A bushel of wheat for a penny, and three bushels of barley for a penny, and wine,
and oil, lest you should be hurt. And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice
of the fourth beast saying: Come and see. and Hell followed him; and power was given to
him over the four parts of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, and with death, and
with the beasts of the earth. : How long, O Lord (holy and true), will you not judge and
avenge our blood on those who live on earth? and it was said to them that they should rest a
little while longer, until their fellow-servants and their brothers, who were to be killed like
them, were completed. ; and the whole moon became like blood: and the stars fell from
heaven upon the earth, as a fig tree casts forth its branches when it is moved by a great
wind. , and the princes, and the tribunes, and the rich, and the strong, and every servant and
free, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains; and they say [Ms. they
will say] to the mountains and to the rocks: Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who
sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of their wrath is
coming: and who will be able to stand? the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds
of the earth [Ms. silent of the earth], that they should not blow upon the earth, nor upon the
sea, nor upon any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having
the sign of the living God; and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was
given to harm the earth and the sea, saying: Do not harm the earth and the sea, nor the
trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. from the tribe of the
children of Israel. From the tribe of Judah twelve thousand sealed. From the tribe of Reuben
twelve thousand sealed. From the tribe of Gad twelve thousand sealed. From the tribe of
Asher twelve thousand sealed. From the tribe of Nephtali twelve thousand sealed. From the
tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand sealed. from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were
sealed. From the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed. From the tribe of Zebulun
twelve thousand were sealed. From the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed. From
the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed. to all nations, and tribes, and peoples,
and tongues: standing before the throne, and in the presence of the Lamb, clothed in white
robes, and palms in their hands; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying: Hail to our
God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb. And all the angels stood around the throne,
and the elders, and the four animals; and they fell before the throne on their faces and
worshiped God, saying: Amen. Blessing, and brightness, and wisdom, and thanksgiving,
honor, and strength, and strength to our God, forever and ever. Amen. Where did they come
from? And I said to him: My Lord, you know, and he said to me: These are the ones who
came from the great tribulation and washed their robes and made them white in the blood
of the Lamb. at night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell over them.
They shall not hunger, nor thirst any more, neither shall the sun fall upon them, nor any
heat, for the Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall rule them, and shall lead them to
the fountains of life of the waters, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
[Chapter 8.] And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven, as if for
half an hour. And I saw seven angels standing in the presence of God: and seven trumpets
were given to them. another angel came and stood before the altar, having a golden censer:
and she gave He had much incense to offer from the prayers of all the saints on the golden
altar, which is before the throne of God. And the smoke of the incense from the prayers of
the saints ascended from the hand of the angel before God. , and there were thunders, and
voices, and lightnings, and a great earthquake. And the seven angels who had seven
trumpets prepared themselves to sound the trumpets. was sent to the earth: and a third
part of the earth was burned, and a third part of the trees were burned, and all the green
grass was burned. and a third part of the creatures that had souls in the sea died, and a third
part of the ships perished. um, and into fountains of waters: and the name of the star is
called Absinthium: and a third part of the waters became absinthium: and many men died
from the waters, because they became bitter. part of the moon, and a third part of the stars:
so that a third part of them was darkened, and a third part of the day did not shine, and
likewise of the night. the earth, from the rest of the voices of the three angels who were
about to sound the trumpet. [Chapter 9.] And the fifth angel sounded the trumpet: and I saw
a star fall from heaven to the earth, and the key of the deep well was given to him. And he
opened the deep well: and smoke ascended well, like the smoke of a great furnace: and the
sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the well: and from the smoke of the well
locusts came upon the earth, and power was given to them, as the scorpions of the earth
have power: and they were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, nor all green e,
nor every tree: except only men who have not the mark of God on their foreheads: and it
was given to them that they should not kill them; but that they should be tormented for five
months: and their torment is like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. upon
their heads were like crowns like gold: and their faces were like the faces of men. And they
had hair like women's hair; and their teeth were like the teeth of lions: and they had belts
like iron belts, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots of many horses
running to war; and they had over them the king of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is
Abaddon [Ms. Abdon], but in Greek Apollyon, having in Latin the name Exterminans. One
woe is gone, and behold two more woes are coming after these. And the sixth angel sounded
a trumpet: and I heard one voice from the four horns of the golden altar, which is before the
eyes of God, saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet: Loose the four angels who are
bound in the great river Euphrates. and a year, so that they killed a third part of the people.
And the number of the cavalry army was two thousand ten thousand. and the heads of the
horses were like the heads of lions: and out of their mouths proceeded fire, and smoke, and
brimstone. for the power of the horses is in their mouths, and in their tails. For their tails
are like serpents, having heads: and in these they hurt. that they should not worship devils,
and idols of gold, silver, and bronze, and stone, and wood, which can neither see, nor hear,
nor walk; from their thefts. he set his right foot upon the sea and the left on the earth: and
he cried with a loud voice, as a lion roars. And when he had cried, the seven thunders spoke
their voices. There are seven thunders, and do not write them. and the earth, and the things
that are in it; and the sea, and the things that are in it: For there shall be no more time: but
in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when the trumpet shall begin to sound, the
mystery of God shall be consummated, as he preached the gospel through his servants the
prophets. And I heard a voice from heaven speaking to me again, and saying : Go and take
the open book from the hand of the angel standing on the sea and on the earth. And I went
to the angel, telling him to give me the book, and he said to me: Take the book and devour it:
and it will make your stomach bitter, but in in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey. And I
took the book from the angel's hand and devoured it: and it was in my mouth as sweet
honey, and when I devoured it, my stomach became bitter; and he said to me: It is necessary
for you to prophesy again to nations, and peoples, and tongues, and to many kings.
worshiping [Ms. dwellers] in it. But cast out the court, which is the temple outside, and do
not measure it: for it has been given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for
forty-two months: and I will give it to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for a
thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees
and the two candlesticks standing in the presence of the Lord of the earth. lest it rain in the
days of their prophecy: and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to
smite the earth with every plague as often as they will. they will lie in the streets of the great
city, which is spiritually called Sodom, and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. And
they will see about tribes, and peoples, and languages, and their bodies being there for three
days and a half; and they will not allow their bodies to be placed in tombs. And the
inhabitants of the earth will rejoice over them, and they will be delighted and they will send
gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwelt on the earth.
and they ascended into heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them. And at that hour
there was a great earthquake, and a tenth part of the city fell; and the names of seven
thousand men were slain in the earthquake; and the rest were sent into fear, and gave glory
to the God of heaven. The second woe is gone: and behold, the third woe will soon come.
and there were loud voices in heaven saying: The kingdom of this world has been
established, of our Lord and of his Christ, and it will reign forever and ever. Amen. and they
worshiped God, saying: We thank you, Lord God Almighty, who are, and who were, and who
are to come: because you received your great power and reigned. And the nations were
angry, and your wrath came, and the time of the dead to be judged, and to repay your
servants, the prophets, and the saints, and those who fear your enemy, small and great, and
to exterminate those who have corrupted [Ms. corrupt] the earth. And the temple of God
was opened in heaven, and the ark of his testament was seen in his temple, and there were
lightnings, and voices, and earthquakes, and great hail. [Chap. XII.] And a great sign
appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on
her head a crown of twelve stars; and having her in her womb, she cried out in labor, and
was tormented to give birth. And another sign was seen in heaven: and behold a great red
dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems; and his tail
drew a third part of the stars of heaven, and sent them to the earth: and the dragon stood
before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she had given birth, he might
devour her son. and his son was caught up to God and to his throne; and the woman fled
into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there
for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. and they were not strong [Ms. they
prevailed], and no place was found for them any more in heaven. and he was cast down to
the earth, and his angels were sent with him. And I heard a great voice in heaven saying:
Now is salvation, and power, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ;
because the accuser of our brothers was cast down, who accused them before the sight of
our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and
because of the word of their testimony; and they did not love their souls until death. Rejoice
therefore, O heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil
has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has a short time. , he pursued
the woman who gave birth to a male child, and two great eagles' wings were given to the
woman so that she could fly into the desert to her place. where he is nourished for a time
and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. and the dragon was angry with the
woman, and he went to make war with the rest of his seed who keep the commandments of
God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. And he stood upon the sand of the sea. having
seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten diadems, and on his heads names of
blasphemy. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, and his feet like the feet of a bear,
and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. great power. And I saw one of his heads as if slain to
death; and the wound of his death was healed. And the whole earth was astonished after the
beast; And they worshiped the dragon who gave power to the beast, and they worshiped the
beast, saying: Who is like the beast? And who can fight with it? and power was given to him
to do forty-two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme
his name, and his tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. And it was given to him to
make war with the saints and to conquer them; and power was given to him over every
tribe, and people, and tongue, and nation: and all who inhabited the earth worshiped her,
whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb, who was slain from the
foundation of the world. If anyone has an ear, let him hear. He who leads into captivity goes
into captivity; He who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. This is the
patience and faith of the saints. And I saw another beast coming up from the earth, and it
had [Ms. having] two horns like a Lamb, and he spoke like a dragon; and he exercised all the
power of the former beast in his sight; And he caused the earth and those who dwell in it to
worship the first beast, whose death wound was healed. And he made great signs, so that he
also caused fire to come down from heaven to the earth in the sight of men. of the beast,
saying to the inhabitants of the earth to make an image of the beast that has the wound of a
sword, and it lived. And he will cause all who do not worship the image of the beast to be
killed. And he will cause all the small, and the great, and the rich, and the poor, and the free,
and the slaves, to have a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads. And so that no one
can buy or sell, except he who has the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of
its name. This is wisdom. He who has understanding will calculate the number of the beast.
For it is the number of man, and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. upon Mount Zion,
and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand, having his name and the name of his
Father written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many
waters, and as the voice of great thunder. and the voice I heard was like that of harpers
playing on their harps. And they sang as it were a new song before the seat and before the
four animals and the elders. and no one could sing a song, except those one hundred and
forty-four thousand who were bought from the earth. These are those who have not been
defiled with women: for they are virgins. These follow the Lamb wherever he goes. theirs is
no falsehood found, for they are without blemish before the throne of God. : Fear the Lord,
and give him honor, because the hour of his judgment is coming; and worship Him who
made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And another angel
followed, saying: Fallen, fallen is that great Babylon, which made all nations drink of the
wine of the wrath of her fornication. And a third angel followed them, saying with a loud
voice : If anyone worships the beast and its image, and receives the mark on his forehead or
on his hand, and here he will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in the
cup of his wrath, and will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy
angels and in the presence of the Lamb ; and the smoke of their cannons will go up forever
and ever, and they will have no rest day and night who worshiped the beast and his image,
and if anyone received the mark of his name. This is the patience of the saints who keep the
commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me:
Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. The Spirit already says that they may rest
from their labors; for their works follow them. And I saw, and behold a white cloud, and one
sitting on the cloud like the Son of Man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand
a sharp sickle. for the hour has come to reap, for the harvest of the earth has withered. And
he who sat on the cloud sent his sickle to the earth, and the earth was brought down. And
another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, having also a sharp sickle. , who
had power over fire; and he cried with a loud voice to him that had a sharp sickle, saying:
Send forth thy sharp sickle, and gather the grapes of the vineyard of the earth, for the grapes
thereof are ripe. big and the lake outside the city was trampled, and blood came out of the
lake up to the bridles of the horses for a thousand and six hundred furlongs. the wrath of
God. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who conquered the beast,
and his image, and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having the harps of
God, and singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
Great and wonderful are thy works, O Lord God Almighty: just and true are thy ways, King
of the ages. Ms. add all] your judgments are manifest. And after these things I saw, and
behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony was opened in heaven: and seven
angels having seven plagues came out of the temple, clothed in linen [Ms. stone] clean and
white, and girded around the breasts with golden belts. And one of the four animals gave
seven golden bowls to the seven angels, full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever.
to enter the temple, until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. and a cruel
and worst wound was inflicted on men who had the character of beasts; and on those who
worshiped his image. And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became
the blood of the dead: and every living soul died in the sea. blood. And I heard the angel of
the waters saying: You are just, Lord, who are you, and who were holy, who judged these
things: because they shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you gave them blood to
drink: for they are worthy. And I heard another from the altar saying: Yes , Lord God
almighty, your judgments are true and just. , that they might give him glory. they ate] their
tongues because of the pain: and they blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains
and wounds, and did not repent of their works. And I saw from the mouth of the dragon,
and from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean
spirits in the form of frogs. Blessed is he who watches and guards his clothes, lest he walk
naked and they see his shame. And he will gather them to a place called in Hebrew
Armageddon [Ms. from the throne, saying: It is done. And there were lightnings, and voices,
and thunders, and there was a great earthquake, such as had never been since men were
upon the earth, such an earthquake tus, so great. And the great city was divided into three
parts: and the nations' cities fell. as a talent descended from heaven upon men: and men
blasphemed God because of the plague of hail: for it became great and violent. to thee the
damnation of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters, with whom the kings of the
