ME-100 INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT # 1

Question 1: (CLO1)
Recall the Washington Accord, of which Pakistan is a
member. Describe how the Department of Mechanical &
Aerospace Engineering conforms to the outcome-based
education concept of this accord under the umbrella of
Pakistan Engineering Council? Discuss the key elements
that the students’ needs to pay attention to.
Washington Accord holds the highest position in the international
forum of the International Engineering Alliance. Washington Accord
is a highly rigorous global standard on engineering education and
accreditation system which grants substantial equivalence of
degrees; means international recognition to equate at par with top
leading signatory countries of the world. To give benefit to the
cross-border mobility of engineers.
The Outcome Based Education(OBE) system presently is a system
that the Self-Assessment is based upon. This is more focused on
the defined objective of engineering education and different
teaching, assessment and evaluation methodologies. According to
the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) the Department of
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (DMAE) has adopted the
OBE system as it is convinced about its quality in its
undergraduates. The OBE system is aimed at inculcating well
defined Graduate Attributes and essential qualities in engineering
students to make them professionally competent engineers,
responsible citizens and human beings with high ethical and moral
standards. For evaluation of students DMAE has adopted the OBE
assessment system in addition to existing conventional grades or
GPA based systems. PLO attainment for each student is now
measured and monitored. After the implementation of the OBE
system, the students are required to satisfy the requirements set by
grades based system as well as that of the OBE system. DMAE
has followed a methodological and systematic approach to defined
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), Program Learning
Outcomes (PLOs), and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) for
each course present in the degree plan. Keeping in view
contemporary industry demands, DMAE has adopted the following
main streams for its BE mechanical Engineering Program:
➢Solid Mechanics and Design
➢Thermo-Fluids
➢Manufacturing
The key elements that the students’ needs to pay attention to are
the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLO);
1. Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of
mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an
engineering specialization to the solution of complex
mechanical engineering problems.
2. Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research
literature, and analyze complex mechanical engineering
problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first
principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering
sciences.
3. Design/Development of Solutions: An ability to design solutions
for complex mechanical engineering problems and design
systems, components or processes that meet specified needs
with appropriate consideration for public health and safety,
cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
4. Investigation: An ability to investigate complex mechanical
engineering problems in a methodical way including literature
survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and
interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of
information to derive valid conclusions.
5. Modern Tool Usage: An ability to create, select and apply
appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering
and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex
mechanical engineering activities, with an understanding of the
limitations.
6. The Engineer and Society: An ability to apply reasoning
informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health,
safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent
responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice
and solution to complex mechanical engineering problems.
7. Environment and Sustainability: An ability to understand the
impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and
environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and the
need for sustainable development.
8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional
ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice.
9. Individual and Team Work: An ability to work effectively, as an
individual or in a team, in multifaceted and/or multidisciplinary
settings.
10. Communication: An ability to communicate effectively, orally as
well as in writing, on complex mechanical engineering activities
with the engineering community and with society at large, such
as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and
design documentation, make effective presentations, and give
and receive clear instructions.
11. Project Management: An ability to demonstrate management
skills and apply engineering principles to one’s own work, as a
member and/or leader in a team, to manage projects in a
multidisciplinary environment.
12. Lifelong Learning: An ability to recognize importance of, and
pursue lifelong learning in the broader context of innovation
and technological developments.
