ART APPRECIATION

The Future of Sculpting in the Philippines

One of the earliest kinds of art is sculpture. In the Philippines, sculpture is a

native art form deeply ingrained in our regional traditions. In Cordillera and Mindanao
groups there is a lot of examples of carved art forms that are a part of daily life and
customs for these ethnolinguistic groups.

In the history of Sculpture in general, it began in Ancient Greece from 800 BC

up to 600 AD. Wherein those sculptors began to adopt from the spiritual items to
capture the human body using metal or stone. In the Philippines, we widely adopted
the western tradition of sculpting.

The man who introduced Sculpture in the Philippines is Napoleon “Billy”

Veloso Abueva, born on January 26, 1930 - February 16, 2018. He was known as
the “Father of the modern Philippine Sculpture” when he was 46 years old through
Proclamation No. 1539. Through this proclamation, he became the youngest
recipient of the award to date.

In additional, the famously known sculpture in the Philippines were Jose Rizal
Monument in Luneta park, The Black Nazarene in Quiapo church, People Power
Monument in EDSA-White Plains in Quezon City, Bonifacio Monument in
Monumento, Caloocan and the Oblation in University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Art began to develop at the end of the 19th century. Through the Academia de
Pintura, Escultura y Grabado de Manila, sculptors started out by creating portraits,
then progressed to creating classical sculptures. Modern sculpture appeared after
World War II and used a broad variety of mediums and materials.

In terms of the future of Sculpting in the Philippines, we must value our

existing works by the famous artists here in the Philippines that we can show to the
world. As the technology arises that the technology that introduces 3D printing,
Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Environmental Sculpture, etc.
As generation Z, we must know the origins of everything we have seen including
sculptures and we cannot forget how to make the traditional way of sculpting by
using soapstone, alabaster, sandstone, limestone and marble manually. Every artist
from past to present and the future must value their efforts to make history.

I believe that additional metal materials or technological advancements that

can be invented to make brand-new sculptures will be the result of sculpture in the
future. If you want to create a work of art or create a statue that imitates a face, I
believe that face recognition that related to sculpture technology may one day be
developed. It will work on a computer that will contain the imitated image and a
machine that will create the sculpture. There has always been a sculpture that
creates an illusion, but I think in the future it will evolve even more

Since technology is advancing at the moment, sculptors may have a variety of

options to further their education and develop their abilities in the future. And I anticipate that
the number of sculpting people will increase in the future.
