Locating Key Details and Specific Information

To find key ideas and specific information in sentences in reading texts:


• Ask who or what the sentence is about.
• Ask what the person or object is doing or what is happening to that person
or object.
• Learn to separate minor details from the main idea. Many words in sentences
describe things about the subject of the sentence and merely add details
around it. If you ask when, what kind, where or why, you will find the
details.This makes it easier to separate the key idea.

The starting point for determining the key idea is finding out who or what the sentence is
about and what the person or object is doing.

Implied Main Idea

When the writer has not stated a main idea, but instead suggests the idea to you through
information in the paragraph, the idea is implied. An implied main idea is one that is suggested.

Here is how to state the main idea in your own words:


• Try to figure out what all the details in the paragraph are trying to show,
not just a few of them.
• Make a complete sentence that names a person or an object and tells what
the person or object is doing.
• Do not look at just a few sentences in the paragraph to find out the main idea.
• Do not offer a statement that is too general as the main idea.

Read the following text from the PLDT Annual Report.

Texting cuts on flower harvest losses

If you happen to pass by Dimasalang St. in Manila and notice the cutflower market there
teeming with the widest variety of bromeliads, roses, and other growing blooms, chances are they’ve
just been freshly delivered, thanks to “texting.”

Dealers send text messages to the rose growers in barangay Alapang and rose-capital Bahung
if there is a high demand for cut flowers in Dimasalang. This alerts the growers to cut their blooms and
truck them out of Baguio for delivery the following day.

“This kind of direct order helps us cut on losses,” said Vicente Segundo, a rose grower. “It’s a
lot cheaper, and you get your message across,” said Mercedes Chiuk in her Kankanaey dialect.

Dealers in Manila advise rose growers via text days ahead of an expected high demand for
flowers, say for Valentine’s Day, Graduation, or All Souls’ Day. By the time the demand day kicks in,
a large supply of flowers will have been sent to Manila for distribution.

“On days when we’ve already cut the flowers and the dealers in Manila send a text that either
say prices are low or there’s no demand, we store them in the coolers and wait until prices have risen,”
said Chiuk.

Since the water supply for rice farming decreased, Barangay Bahung that used to have
golden rice fields now prides itself for its numerous cutflower greenhouses, nurseries
and plantations. Now, anthurium, baby’s breath, gladiola, dahlias and mums are being
propagated.

Below is a book review of Jovito R. Salonga’s “Not by Power or Wealth Alone” written
by Dante M. Velasco.

Eloquent, lyrical and compelling

You will be grabbed by a deep sense of nostalgia for a heroic leader when you read this book,
Not by Power or Wealth Alone, written by one who lives this article of faith until now.

He is widely known as one who became the Senate President who achieved, against
all odds, what others failed to do – dismantle the foreign military bases. It was he who was most
qualified to be President but – to the eternal regret of many – did not make it because he ran on a
platform of “principled politics.” He lost the presidency, and yet he won – and continues to win – the
hearts of many freedom-loving, democratically committed and virtue-driven people. This book is a
rare chance to take a peek at Salonga’s inner life.

Theodore Roosevelt spoke of men wounded and scarred in the “arena of action” –
but here is a man who was really tortured by the Japanese Kempetai and was almost
lifeless when a bomb exploded in Plaza Miranda in August 1971.

This man prayed and he said: “So that I may learn to consecrate myself to something bigger
than life itself so that I may realize the truth that to have broken bones, to be physically shattered and
crippled, is not of great moment as long as we do not allow
anyone to break our faith in God, and cripple our love for our fellowmen.”

Whence come the uncommon strength and courage of the author? In a speech before
Cursillistas, he provides us a clue: he finds strength from his faith. He said: “To some
people, religion is a little air-conditioned compartment on the side of life, an escape,
a refuge from real issues. But the meaning of the Christian gospel is that religion is
everything – or it’s nothing.”

The author’s 1969 New Year reflections show he remains attuned to sobering realities about
the people, while so-called “religious people” tune them out: “There are things I
do not want to forget – the suffering I saw in the provinces, the injustice of incredible
poverty in many of our villages and barrios, the lack of opportunity among our people
bound by years of misery. It is remembering those little faces of children, haunted by
hunger and by the fear of tomorrow that I realize there is still much to be done.”

Salonga also recalls advising a head of state, in connection with a wiretapping incident in
2005, saying: “My advice to the President was quite simple and direct: ‘Be not afraid to tell the truth’.”

Indeed, this man who believes that “Greatness is all about service, not about power
or wealth.” matters to this country in desperate search for modern-day heroes.
