The páramos are mountain ecosystems that

develop above the Andean forests, at heights that can
exceed 3,000 meters above sea level. Due to its location
in the equatorial zone, they have a cold climate all year
round, and their soils of volcanic origin are usually very
fertile.
They are mountain ecosystems several meters above sea
level. Taking care of them is of vital importance since the
water resources of small and large cities depend on
them. The páramos of Colombia are located in the upper
part of the mountains, mainly in the Andes mountain
range.

Climate change: Climate change is one of the main

problems affecting the páramos. The increase in global
temperature and changes in rainfall patterns are causing
the reduction of glaciers and water reserves in the
páramos. This directly affects the communities that
depend on water from these ecosystems for their supply,
agriculture and livestock.

Human Activities: Irresponsible human activities

represent a significant threat to the páramos. Illegal
mining, felling of forests, burning of vegetation, and the
expansion of agriculture and livestock without proper
management are practices that cause deforestation, soil
erosion, and contamination of water sources in the
páramos. These actions diminish the capacity of the
páramos to provide crucial environmental services, such
as the regulation of the water cycle and the conservation
of biodiversity.

Invasive species: The introduction of invasive species is

another major problem in the páramos. Introduced
plants and animals, which are not native to these
ecosystems, can displace native species and alter natural
ecological processes. This can lead to biodiversity loss
and habitat degradation in páramos. An example of an
invasive species in the páramos is cattle, which can cause
significant damage by trampling and overgrazing native
vegetation.
