What is a Direct Object?

Direct object – is a noun or pronoun that


receives the action of a transitive action
verb.
• Transitive verbs – are action verbs that directs action
toward someone or something
Example:
Pat dropped her books.
Recognize a direct object when you find one.
A direct object will follow a transitive verb (a type of action
verb). Direct objects can be nouns, pronouns, phrases, or clauses.

Just remember this simple formula:

Subject Verb what? or who? Direct Object


Example:
Joshua won the contest.

Paula won the trophy.

.
Do not use subject pronouns as direct objects.

Examples

▪ The old man chewed his food.

▪ The dog dug a hole under the fence.

▪ Alexander the Great conquered leaders in

most of ancient Europe.


Identify the Direct Objects in the following sentences.

◼ Tommy caught the flu and is at home sick.


◼ My teacher wanted my essay.
◼ The Seahawks played an amazing game in spite of
their loss Monday night.
◼ After class, I wrote a note.
◼ The young girl scouts sold cookies and drinks at the
football game.
