Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Training is led and orientated, the training will have influence on the performance

and if the training is given by the company is successful then the performance of the

employee will increase by itself (Dessler, 2013).

Employee training and development refers to the continued efforts of a company

to boost the performance of its employees. It refers to educational activities within a

company created to enhance the knowledge and skills of employees while providing

information and instruction on how to better perform specific tasks. Companies aim to

train and develop employees by using an array of educational methods and programs.

In the past few years, training and development have emerged as a crucial element of

strategy. More company owners have realized that investing in employee training and

development not only serves as a motivation, but it also enables the organization to

create a highly skilled workforce. Also, supporting untrained employees costs the

organization more than it would if it employed well-trained individuals.

Other perks of employee training and development include improvements in

boosting company reputation and addressing weak links in the organization. Another

factor that gives effect to the performance of employees of them is development,

development is giving a lesson to help the growth of employees, give directives to the

performance of employees on their work to improve the employee's position in the

future. This study aims to elaborate the training and development procedures of

employee performance. This concerns the performance of employees in a fast-food

restaurant to improve the performance of employees in the company in conducting

training and employee development in developing creativity in work to get the best

employee performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study will provide the analytical and statistical data of the following questions.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Position

1.3 Sex

1.4 Hours of Work

1.5 Years in Field

2. Is initial training still necessary even after years of experience in the field?

3. How can the training boost their confidence when it comes to their performance at the

end of the training period?

4. Is there any significant relationship between the initial training to the performance of

the respondents?

5. What fast food business has the most effective training period?

5.1 McDonalds

5.2 Jollibee

5.3 KFC

5.4 Mang Inasal

5.5 Others

Hypothesis

H1: There is no statistically significant difference between the training and development

to the performance rate of an employee.

H2: There is a statistically significant relationship between the training and development

to the performance rate of an employee.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the influence of training and development to the

performance of an employee and the key factors that may affect their performance. The

data collection will be conducted to selected 20 employees of different fast-food

business within Caloocan City.

This study will not cover the performance review conducted by their own

managers in the company. The main source of data will be survey questionnaires which

will be prepared by the researchers. Each of the respondents is given the same

questionnaires to answer and will be used to determine and answer the problems stated

above.

Significance of the Study

This research is made with the aim to provide the crucial information on how a

training affects the performance of an employee and gain such knowledge from the

respondents. The results of this study would be beneficial to the following:

Training and Development Managers

They are the managers who specialize in the training and development of a

company's employees, and this study will aid them by letting them understand the

factors how a fast-food crew quickly improves his performance.

Fast Food Crews

Fast food crew are stationed differently according to their ability and features but

a right training method will boost dramatically their performance on a certain station.

Customers

A fast, clean, and correct cooking procedure can lead to a better service to the

customer. Thus, they will experience the best service a fast food business can offer that

is worth their money.

Future Researchers

This research will be a useful reference for the future researches who plan to

make any related study about training and development that is a standard underlying

the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resource

Management.

The bottom line is, this study will aid the managers, fast food crews, customers,

and future researchers on how a training and development greatly affects the

performance of a fast-food crew on their designated station.

Definition of Terms

Training and development

Training and development refers to educational activities within a company

created to enhance the knowledge and skills of employees while providing information

and instruction on how to better perform specific tasks. Training is a short-term reactive

process meant for operatives and process while development is designed continuous

pro-active process meant for executives. In training employees' aim is to develop

additional skills and in development, it is to develop a total personality.

Performance

The capability of the service-oriented systems to achieve its functionality well,

which can be measured by the throughout and the response time and It is also defined

as the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function.

Employee

An employee is an individual who works for someone else in exchange for

compensation. The exact nature of an employee arrangement is important since the

applicability of payroll taxes and the responsibility for their remittance depends on

whether someone is an employee. Thus, a person who performs services for a business

may be categorized in one of the following ways.

Fast Food Business

The fast-food business includes restaurants that cater to people who are

traveling and want to buy food that is served quickly. Most restaurants in the business

have drive-thru service that allows people to get their food without getting out of their

cars, and there is also usually the option to go inside. Many restaurants in the fast food

business are part of large chains.

Initial industry

An initial industry is a classification that refers to a group of companies that are

related in terms of their primary business activities.

McDonalds

Mcdonald’s is one of the most popular chains of fast-food restaurants in the

world. The company was established in 1940, and today has around 40 thousand

locations all over the globe (most Mcdonald’s restaurants are franchises). The menu of

the chain is based on burgers.

Jollibee

Jollibee is a significant chain of fast-food restaurants from the Philippines. The

first establishment of the chain was created in 1978. Since then, their franchises have

spread to many countries in Asia, North America and even Europe. The usual menu is a

fusion of elements from American and Filipino cuisines.

Mang Inasal

Mang Inasal, innovation is important because competition in the fast-food

industry is very tight. Product innovation is a must as it adds value to the company since

products are being offered to the market for attention, acquisition or consumption that

may satisfy a need or want. In this case product innovation is done to get the attention

of customers and most especially the non-customers of the company so that they will

have a chance to steal some market share of their competitors.

KFC

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) is an American fast food restaurant chain

headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, that specializes in fried chicken. It is the world's

second-largest restaurant chain (as measured by sales) after McDonald's, with 22,621

locations globally in 150 countries as of December 2019. The chain is a subsidiary of

Yum! Brands, a restaurant company that also owns the Pizza Hut and Taco Bell chains.

KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders (1890–1980), an entrepreneur who

began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the

Great Depression.
