STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

A descriptive study to assess the knowledge and practice regarding biomedical waste
management among the health personnel working at community health centre in a selected
district.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are:

1. To assess the knowledge level of health personnels on Biomedical waste

management.
2. To assess the level of Practice of health personnels on Biomedical waste
management.
3. To find out the association between level of knowledge and Practice among of
health personnels on Biomedical waste management.
4. To find out the association between level of knowledge and Practice on Biomedical
waste management among of health personnels with their selected demographic
variables.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS

1. Assess: In this study assess means to find out the existing knowledge regarding
biomedical waste management among the health personnels.
2. Knowledge: In this study Knowledge is considered as awareness of health personnels
regarding biomedical waste management
3. Practice: In this study practice means the actions carried out by the health personnels
regarding biomedical waste management.
4. Health personnels: It refers to all persons working in health care settings.
5. Biomedical waste management: In this study biomedical waste refers to discarded
material which are generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of
human beings.
6. Community health centre: community-based and patient-directed organizations that
serve populations with limited access to health care”.
ASSUMPTIONS

The study assumes that

The study assumed that students

have some
1. Health personnels may have adequate knowledge regarding biomedical waste
management.
2. Health personnels may have good practice regarding biomedical waste management.

HYPOTHESIS

H1 -There will be significant association between knowledge and practice of biomedical waste
management among health personnel.

H2- There will be a significant association between knowledge and selected demographic
variables of health personnel on biomedical waste management.

H3-There will be significant association between practice and selected demographic variables
of health personnel on biomedical waste management.

DELIMITATIONS

The study will be delimited to health personnels:

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN: Descriptive design.

RESEARCH APPROACH: Quantitative research approach.

RESEARCH SETTING: The selected community health centre at Hisar.

POPULATION: Health personnels working in selected community health centre at Hisar.

SAMPLE AND SAMPLE SIZE: 60 health personnels will be selected as sample.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Non- probability purposive sampling technique.

SAMPLING CRITERIA:

Inclusion criteria

The following inclusion criteria are set to select the samples.

 Health personnels at community health centre.

 Health personnels present at the time of data collection

 Those who have Consented to participate in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Samples excluded in the present study were health personnels,

 Not available at the time of data collection.

 Those who were not consented to participate in study.

RESEARCH VARIABLES:

• Dependent variable: Knowledge and practice of biomedical waste management

• Demographic variables: Age, Sex, occupation, experience, awareness and source of
information will be demographic variables of health personnels

PILOT STUDY – Pilot study will be conducted on 10% of sample of main study sample
size.

ETHICAL CONSIDRATION

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

DATA COLLECTION TOOLS AND TECHNIQUE

DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF DATA COLLECTION

TOOL Description of the Tool

A structured knowledge questionnaire will be prepared and used to assess knowledge

regarding Biomedical waste Management

Section A: Consist of items on demographic data age, Sex, occupation, experience, awareness
and source of information.

Section B: Consist of structured knowledge questionnaire on Biomedical waste management

based on the following aspects.

 Source of origin of biomedical waste

 Waste management and handling rules

 Disease transmission

 Color coding

 Segregation of waste

 Disposal of waste

Which consists of 30 multiple choice questions regarding organ donation. It has four options
among which, one is the correct response. Scores will be interrupted as follows:

Adequate level of knowledge above 75%

Moderately adequate level of knowledge 50% -74%

Inadequate level of knowledge below 50%

Section C: Consist of a practice checklist was used to assess practices. It consist of 10
statement. Correct practice score 1 and wrong will be mark as 0. Maximum possible score
will be 10 and minimum will be 0.

Score interpretation for practice

Adequate level of practice above 75%

Moderately adequate level of practice 50% -74%

Inadequate level of practice below 50%

PILOT STUDY: Pilot study consist of 10% of sample of main study.

ETHICAL CONSIDRATION:

 The proposed study will be conducted after the approval of dissertation committee.
 Consent of each subject will be obtained before starting the data collection.
 Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the study.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DATA

DATA ANALYSIS

The collected data will be analysed in terms of descriptive and inferential statistics.

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS:

 Mean, standard Deviation To assess the knowledge and practice of health

personnel on biomedical waste management.
 Karl Pearson correlation formula, to determine the relationship between
knowledge and practice regarding biomedical waste management.
INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
 Chi Square test To Find out the association between knowledge and practice score
regarding biomedical waste management organ with their demographic variables.
