Introduction

Capnography is an essential monitor in anaesthesia, mandated by Guidelines for a Safe

Practice of Anesthesia from anaesthesia societies all over the world. WHO-WFSA
Guidelines recommend it but have not yet made it mandatory, because of the unavailability
of capnography in resource constrained settings.

The objective of the Smile Train-Lifebox Initiative’s capnography project was to seek a low
resource appropriate “capnography solution” that meets the needs of Smile Train partner
hospitals in their provision of comprehensive, safe cleft care. The selected device will
support Smile Train’s aim to improve the access of capnography for cleft surgery in LMICs.

After an exhaustive RFP process, technical and clinical evaluation, a device was finalised.
The plan is to distribute 300 units to Smile Train partners across 3 countries by March
2024.

Training

The device distribution will be integrated with a training plan as the anesthesiologists and
non-physician anaesthesia providers (NPAPs) would require training to operate the device.
Education material has been developed by anaesthesia experts to ensure that new
adopters of capnography will have sufficient knowledge to safely use the device, interpret
the information and manage any identified patient problems.

Assignment

You are the Training Manager leading the training strategy and implementation for Lifebox.
The device distribution is being led by the Lifebox MedTech Program Manager. How would
you go about ensuring an effective training program is planned and implemented for the
users of the first 300 devices?

1. Please share the Capnography training strategy and plan for the project
2. Your strategy should include, but not limited to, trainer selection, training of trainers,
quality assessment, monitoring and evaluation
3. Specify the resources and support you will need

Note: Please feel free to make assumptions and mention them as you would not have all
the required information on the project.
