Fossils can form internal molds or casts when the original skeletal material dissolves away, leaving a void that is filled by minerals from the surrounding sediment like sand or carbonate mud. 2. If the fossil is preserved in sandstone, the sand fills the void of the original fossil as a cast. If preserved in limestone, the void may be filled by carbonate mud or minerals like calcite that precipitate as cement. 3.
