This paper is about a study conducted on the stability conditions of

road cut debris slope along the National Highway-7 (NH-7) in Uttarakhand,
India. The researchers used various geotechnical tests in evaluating the
engineering properties of the slope materials, such as shear strength,
density analysis, rock hardness, particle size analysis, Atterberg limits, and
XRD analysis. The slope stability was assessed using the limit equilibrium
method (LEM) and finite element methods based on strength reduction factor
(FEM-SRF). The results showed that the slope materials mainly consisted of
well-graded sands and gravelly sands with low plasticity and exhibited
moderate cohesion and internal friction angle. The engineering geotechnical
properties along with the mineral composition of fine fraction of the slope
materials revealed no significant effect that could disintegrate the stability
condition of the slope. The stability analysis indicated that the slopes with
the highest and dip angle were critically stable with a strength reduction
factor less than 1. The study concluded that the slope geometry, specifically
the overall slope angle and height, had a greater influence on stability than
the presence of swelling clay minerals. The researchers suggested some
stabilization measures to improve stability like excavation at the crown part
of the slope, installation of retaining and gabion walls along the toe, and
grass planting on the slope surface.

Geotechnical Characterization of Weathered Limestone used as an
Alternative Embankment Material for Roadway Construction.
By: Mary Ann Adajar, Gabriel De Los Reyes, Kamille San Miguel, Reinell Arian Tan
and Kristel Angela Taruc

The researchers were able to provide geotechnical characterization of

“Anapog,” a locally abundant weathered limestone found in Visayas region,
Consolacion, Cebu specifically. The study aims to determine physical
properties, compaction behavior, shear strength properties, consolidation
properties, and load bearing capacity in order to prove its effectiveness as a
construction material. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and
Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) test, the microfabric structure and chemical
composition of “Anapog” were analyzed. Carbon, Oxygen, Aluminum,
Silicon, Calcium, Iron, and other chemical elements, together with sub-
angular platy particles were found in the “Anapog.” A series of ASTM
standard test used to examine the physical properties of “Anapog.” Based
on Proctor test, its compaction behavior was rated fair to excellent when
used as embankment material. The consolidation properties indicated that it
is slightly compressible when normally consolidated and very slightly
compressible when overconsolidated. While the shear strength properties of
“Anapog” were evaluated through the direct shear test, it revealed a ductile
stress-strain behavior in both dry and saturated condition. The values of
angle friction ranges from 30 to 32 degrees. Pure “Anapog” was found out to
be suitable to be a subgrade material in road construction based on the load
bearing capacity test. It can also be used as a subbase and base course
material when blended with 30% to 40% crushed stone and gravel. This
study used the above mention tests and proved that the “Anapog” is suitable
as an alternative material for roadway construction and other engineering
applications.
