Can we attain those lesson objectives

for today? Yes, Ma’am!

To attain those lesson objectives you

all need to listen and actively
participate.
We will Ma’am!

3 minutes D. Unlocking of Difficulties

(Power Point So class, be familiar with the following terms
Presentation) that we will encounter throughout the
discussion.
Definition:
 PERMUTATION - It refers to the
different possible arrangement of a set
of an object.
 ARRANGEMENT – in objects it is
simply grouping them.
 PERMUTATION IN A ROW – as in a
linear permutation in a row
arrangement there is a start and there
is an end.
 DISTINCT OR DISTINGUISHABLE
PERMUTATION – a permutation of a
set of distinct objects in a specific
order without repetition.
 CIRCULAR PERMUTATION – it is
the total number of ways in which n
distinct objects can be arranged
around a fix circle.
 FACTORIAL – the product of all
positive integers less than or equal to
n. The factorial of n also equals the

20 minutes E. Lesson Proper

(Power Point 1. Activity (Group Activity)
Presentation)
Okay class, what do you call this kind of
lock?

“A combination lock Ma’am.”

Yes! This is a combination lock. Why do you
think it is called a combination lock?
“Because it could be locked using a
combination of numbers.”
Very good!
Why do we need to use a lock? Is it useful?
It is important for us to secure our
things or our home so that nothing
bad happens.

That’s right! Now we will be having an

activity.
I already divided you in to four groups. Since
collaboration is slightly difficult all of you are
required to participate in our activity.

Are you ready class?

Our activity entitled: “Yes, Ma’am!”

“LET US HELP GAVIN OPEN HIS HOUSE”
Your group task is to help someone in the
midst of a problem. Read and understand the
given statement. The first 2 groups that got
the correct answer is the winner.
Gavin buy a combination lock to secure his
new house, early in the morning he went out
for his job and came home at 5 in the
afternoon. When he tries to open the padlock
he forget the combination of numbers he put
as a code. Gavin only remember the numbers
1, 5, and 8 at that moment. Now your task is
to help Gavin find how many possible
combination of three numbers he will do to get
the correct code and what arrangements of
number did you get?
(Students read the statement and
starts to answer)
Expected Answer:
 6 combination of numbers
 185 581 815
851 518 158

2. Analysis

How is the permutation used to help

Gavin open his combination lock?
“With the help of permutation we are
able to help Gavin find the possible
combination of numbers and its
arrangement, so that we open the
combination lock.”
That’s great! Thank you, Jaira.

So class, as you can see this activity

has something to do our discussion for
today. Using permutation we are
going to find out the possible set of
arrangement of the given objects for
us to derive in a precise answer.

3. Abstraction
How do we find the Permutation of
objects?
Example 1: In how many ways can 5
people arrange themselves in a row
for picture taking?

Anyone from the class? Yes, Neo?

“It’s 120 Ma’am.”

Very good!
Using the formula Permutation of n
object taken All at a time P(n, n) = n!,
we will get 120 as the answer.
P(5,5) = 5!
P(5,5) = 5 ∙ 4 ∙ 3 ∙ 2 ∙ 1
P(5,5) = 120

Example 2: Suppose we have 6

different triangles and we wish to
arrange 4 of them in a row. In how
many ways can this be done?

Anyone from the class? Yes Max?

“Its 360 Ma’am.”

That’s right!
Using the formula Permutation taken r
𝑛!
at a time P(n, r) = (𝑛−𝑟)!, we will get
360 as the answer.
The value of n = 6 and r = 4.
6!
P(6, 4) =
(6 − 4)!

6∙5∙4∙3∙2∙1 720
P= =
2! 2
P = 360

Example 3: How many distinguishable

permutations are possible with all the
letters of the word ELLIPSES?

Anyone form the class? Ok LV.

“Its 5,040 distinguishable
permutations Ma’am.”

That’s right!
Using the formula for distinct or
𝑛!
distinguishable permutation P = 𝑝!𝑞!𝑟!
we will get 5,040 as the answer.

The number of permutation is 8! =

40,320. In distinguishable permutation
we have to consider the letters that
has the same, the 2 E’s, 2 L’s and 2
S’s.
8! 8∙7∙6∙5∙4∙3∙2∙1
P= =
2! 2! 2! (2)(2)(2)
40,320
P= = 5,040
8

Example 4: Find the number of

different ways that a family of 6 can
be seated around a circular table with
6 chairs?

Anyone form the class? Yes, Kiel.

“Its 120 Ma’am.”
That’s right!
Using the formula for circular
permutation P = (n − 1)!, we will get
120 as the answer.
P = (6 − 1)! = 5! = 120

Congratulations! All of you got the correct

answers.

3 minutes F. Generalization
(Power Point Did you understand the concept of
Presentation) permutation class?
All – Yes Ma’am!
Based from our activity who can sum
up our lesson for today?
Using the methods:
1. Permutation of n object taken
All at a time P(n, n) = n!
2. Permutation taken r at a time
𝑛!
P(n, r) = (𝑛−𝑟)!
3. Distinguishable permutation
𝑛!
P = 𝑝!𝑞!𝑟!
4. Circular permutation P = (n −
1)!
We will be able to find the permutation
of the given objects.

Very good! Do you have any questions

or clarifications about our topic today?
None, Ma’am!
That’s good!

3 minutes G. Valuing
(Power Point How do we apply the lesson that we
Presentation) have discussed to real-life situation?

Permutation has its immense used in

human lives. Actually we unconsciously
do activity that we apply the
permutation. The example of use

permutations in daily life are: in

election of organization’s structure, in
determining the number of sequence
of letters and numbers, the amount of
variance number for SIM card, the
arrangement of colors, and application
of the science of encryption or security

Precisely! Since it is clear that

permutation has it purpose in our
lives, it is another reason that we
need to deeply understand its
concept.
