♚ Preface
A lot of chess players feel that end games are boring with long drawn strategic plans. Actually
they are rich in tactical positions and if you want to win you must be alert for these tactical
positions.
After thinking hard for the entire game and with less time remaining on the clock, sometimes,
when a game finishes, it is more often due to some missed Knight fork or a Bishop pin, rather
than a lack of sound technical knowledge of that endgame.
And this is what this book aims to do; provide tactical puzzles from real games for your practice.
As you solve the puzzles, you will absorb common themes and patterns that will help you in your
games, especially during the endgame.
While working on this ebook, even if you don't get the correct moves at the first attempt, make a
note of the puzzle number and revisit it later. Once you are done solving all puzzles, start again
and solve them at a faster rate! This will build up your intuition and even with less time on the
clock you would know what to do to convert that loss into a draw and a draw into a whole point!

@chess_media - Tactics in the Endgame - Asim Pereira
♚ Introduction
"Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get"
When the position reaches the endgame, we generally have less time on the clock and many
moves are made by pure instinct and less amount of calculation. Pieces fly off the board (quite
literally!) and blunders are made. You should be aware of a tactical shot and also prevent falling
into one.
Your intuition and prior knowledge should just deliver the winning blow!
What to expect
All puzzles have a single purpose; you have to find the best move possible for White or
Black (indicated by the square box next to the board). The game may not always end in a
checkmate. Some moves simply win a pawn or two, or a piece
Puzzles have intentionally not been grouped according to themes, else it can make the
solution very obvious
Puzzles are arranged in increasing order of difficulty starting with some basic one-movers
going up to 7-8 moves
The puzzles are assorted, yet you will come across some recurring themes and patterns in this
book. I have tried to summarize them here.
Simplification
Material being more or less equal, one would simplify the endgame to its bare minimum
sufficient to win the game, such that the opponent has very less chance of counterplay, compared
to the position before the simplification.
8
@chess_media - Tactics in the Endgame - Asim Pereira
In the above position, White simply captures the Black Knight thereby steering the game into a
won pawn endgame and preventing any counterplay from his opponent.
Promotion
When a pawn is closer to the last rank, its value multiplies manifold. This is when the stronger
side would do anything to get it promoted.
9
@chess_media - Tactics in the Endgame - Asim Pereira
The Black pawn is just one step away from becoming a Queen, but the queening square is
currenlty guarded by the White Rook. So Black offers his Rook with a check to ensure the pawn
can promote.
Mating nets
Checkmate is easier when the winning side has several more pieces than the losing side. But in
this book you will find many puzzles with picturesque mates in seemingly harmless positions.
10
@chess_media - Tactics in the Endgame - Asim Pereira
Oh that Knight!
Knight forks
Many players including masters have fallen prey to this dangerous piece. Knight forks occur
more frequently than any other tactical themes and can also be the most difficult to spot for either
side. And in the endgame with less pieces on board, the Knight fork can be immediately fatal.
11
@chess_media - Tactics in the Endgame - Asim Pereira
The puzzles in this book also have the usual tactical themes like Pin, Skewer, Back rank
weakness etc, albeit in the endgame position.
12

♚ Puzzles - Level 1
Even the laziest king flees wildly in the face of double check. - Aaron Nimzowitsch
There are 37 puzzles in this level. They are mostly one-movers and will be a good stimulant for
chess thinking.
The solutions are placed immediately after the puzzle on the next page for easy reference.

In general I consider that in chess everything rests on tactics. If one thinks of strategy as a block
of marble, then tactics are the chisel with which a master operates, in creating works of chess
