JOB ADVERT

Makerere University, School of Public Health (MakSPH) with support from the U.S. Centres
for Disease Control and Prevention is planning an evaluation of interventions that were
implemented to mitigate effects of teenage pregnancy in selected districts of Uganda. The
evaluation will be conducted in 22 districts that is; Zombo, Kitgum, Kotido, Napak, Alebtong,
Oyam, Kaberamaido, Amuria, Kiboga, Nakaseke, Wakiso, Masaka, Kalangala, Sheema,
Buhweju, Kasese, Kabarole, Rubanda, Mbale, Manafwa, Kamuli and Jinja.
The evaluation team, therefore, seeks to recruit responsible, qualified, and competent
individuals who can work with minimum supervision to join its team as Research Assistants
and Data Managers to support data collection for a period of 14 days.

1.0 Research Assistant – 40 Positions


Position status: Short-term contract
Reports to: Study Coordinator
Summary of Responsibilities:
• Participate in data collection in accordance with the study protocol
• Answer questions that the respondents may ask during the course of data collection
• Participate in data validation to ensure quality of the data collected
• Provide daily updates on field work including interviews completed and any other
important information on field data collection
• Any other duties assigned by the data collection team leaders or the study Coordinator

Minimum qualification and experience


• Bachelor’s degree in Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, or any other related
discipline
• Possession of a Certificate in Good Clinical Practices or human subject’s protection is
a MUST.
• Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) and at least one of the local languages
spoken in the study areas.
• Prior experience of conducting face to face interviews.
• Prior experience of collecting either quantitative or and qualitative data.
• Prior experience in interviewing teenagers and using child friendly methods of
interviewing.
• Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to follow
study specific procedures and guidelines reliably.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and observe deadlines.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Study Coordinator

2.0. Data Manager/Analyst (Quantitative) – 1 Position
Reporting to: Study Coordinator
Period: Short-term contract
Summary of Responsibilities:
• Coordinate all steps in data collection and management.
• Support the review of the existing data management manuals and training materials.
• Design data cleaning, analysis, and reporting tools as may be required.
• Verify raw data sent from the field.
• Generate and transmit data queries to field teams for resolution.
• Resolve all data related issues raised with the datasets.
• Routinely compile data files.
• Compile and submit regular reports summarizing progress in data entry, data validation
and cleaning.
• Carry out data analysis of the survey data.
• Ensure safety of all data/information handed over to them.
• Ensure that data is maintained in both soft and hard copies and backed up.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Study Coordinator.
Minimum qualification and experience
Bachelor’s degree is either Statistics, Computer Sciences, information systems or the
equivalent and a postgraduate training related to quantitative data management. Must have
experience in electronic data management, able to manage data from various sources and
conduct preliminary data analysis.

3.0. Qualitative Data Analyst – 1 Position


Reporting to: Study Coordinator
Period: Short-term contract
Summary of Responsibilities:
• Support the review of existing data collection tools, training materials and related
standard operating procedures.
• Participate in training of research assistants and pre-testing of the study tools.
• Coordinate all steps in data collection and management.
• Verify raw data sent from the field and the transcripts.
• Participate in management, quality control and analysis of qualitative data.
• Compile and submit regular reports summarizing progress in data collection and
preliminary findings.
• Ensure safety of all data/information handed over to them.
• Ensure that data is maintained in both soft and hard copies and backed up.
• Participate in the writing of the qualitative report.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Study Coordinator.

Minimum qualification and experience
Masters’ degree in Social Sciences, Public Health or the equivalent and a related training in
qualitative data analysis. Must have prior experience in analysis of qualitative data using
Atlas.ti software.
