Number Sets
We use to
represent the set of
all natural numbers or
also called whole
numbers
{0,1,2,3,…}
to represent the
set of all integer
{0,+-1, +-2, +-3, …}
to represent
the set of rational
numbers
Irrational numbers
are those which
cannot be written in
rational form.
ORDER OF
OPERATION
Paulina Treviño Salazar
Order:
1. Parentheses
The first step is to solve the operation within
parentheses or brackets.
2. Exponents
Work out the exponential expressions after the
parentheses.
Example : 100 ÷ (6 + 7 × 2) – 5
Solution:
Step 1 – Multiplication inside parentheses: 100 ÷ (6 + 7 × 2) – 5
= 100 ÷ (6 + 14) – 5
03
Example:
436 to the nearest 10 = 440
round up, as 6 is greater
than 5
04 Example 2:
716 to the nearest
100= 700
round down, as 1 is
less than 5
37 600
3.76 x 10^4
3.76 x 10000
EXAMPLES
0.0000086
8.6 x 10^-6
8.6/10^6 = 8.6/1000000
7.56 x10^5
a x 10^4

8.45 x 10^-9
= 4.62 x 10^0
8 x 10^2

Absolute values &
FACTORIALS
2. Examples
|6| = 6 | –65| = 65
10| = 10 | 49| = 49
3. What is a factorial?
A factorial is the product of all the
positive integers less than the number
given. It is written with an exclamation
point.
6 = 1 × 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 = 720
3! = 1 × 2 × 3 = 6
