Number Sets

We use to
represent the set of
all natural numbers or
also called whole
numbers
{0,1,2,3,…}

to represent the
set of all integer
{0,+-1, +-2, +-3, …}

to represent
the set of rational
numbers

represent the set of

all real numbers which
include all numbers
which can be placed
on the number line

Irrational numbers
are those which
cannot be written in
rational form.
ORDER OF
OPERATION
Paulina Treviño Salazar

The order of operations is the rule that

tells us the sequence in which we should
solve an expression with multiple
operations.

A way to remember that

order is PEMDAS. Each letter
in PEMDAS stands for a
mathematical operation.

Order:
1. Parentheses
The first step is to solve the operation within
parentheses or brackets.

2. Exponents
Work out the exponential expressions after the
parentheses.

3. Multiplication and 4. Addition and

Division Subtraction
Next, moving from left Lastly, moving from left
to right, multiply to right, add and/or
and/or divide, subtract, whichever
whichever comes first. comes first.

Example : 100 ÷ (6 + 7 × 2) – 5
Solution:
Step 1 – Multiplication inside parentheses: 100 ÷ (6 + 7 × 2) – 5
= 100 ÷ (6 + 14) – 5

Step 2 – Addition inside parentheses: 100 ÷ (6 + 14) – 5

= 100 ÷ 20 – 5

Step 3 – Division: 100 ÷ 20 – 5 = 5 – 5 Step 4 – Subtraction: 5 – 5 = 0

Rounding
numbers
01
There are many
occasions when it is
sensible to give an
approximate answer.

02 Rules of rounding numbers:

1- If the after the one being
rounded off is less than 5
(0,1,2,3,4) we found down.
2- If the digit after the one being
rounded off is 5 or more
(5,6,7,8,9) we round up.

03
Example:
436 to the nearest 10 = 440
round up, as 6 is greater
than 5

04 Example 2:
716 to the nearest
100= 700
round down, as 1 is
less than 5

Guide
Scientific
Notation
brief explanation

Many people doing scientific work

deal with very large or very small
numbers.

To avoid having to write and

count a lots of zeros, they write
these numbers using scientific
notation or standard form

37 600
3.76 x 10^4
3.76 x 10000
EXAMPLES
0.0000086
8.6 x 10^-6
8.6/10^6 = 8.6/1000000

7.56 x10^5
a x 10^4
1= a x 10 4.5 x 10^-3
1xE2
7.88 x 10^8
4.62
8.45 x 10^-9
= 4.62 x 10^0
8 x 10^2

EXAMPLE

The ball bearing in a pen nib has diameter 0.003 m.

R= 3 x 10^-3

Absolute values &
FACTORIALS

1. What is an absolute value?

The absolute valuen of a real number x,
written like |x|, is the non-negative value
of x without regard to its sign.

2. Examples
|6| = 6 | –65| = 65

|–6| = 6 | -500| = 500

10| = 10 | 49| = 49

3. What is a factorial?
A factorial is the product of all the
positive integers less than the number
given. It is written with an exclamation
point.

4. Simplify the answer

4! =1 × 2 × 3 × 4 = 24

6 = 1 × 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 = 720

3! = 1 × 2 × 3 = 6
