Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY ACTIVITY SHEETS

Discussing Responsible Use of Media and Information

I. Learning Competency (MELC)

Discuss responsible use of media and information

II. Background Information for Learners

Media is like a machine which makes people’s life easier. Communication can be
a great testament that media has its way of bridging the gap between traditional and
modern world. Media has found to be a very effective way in sharing information across
the globe. Keeping the people aware, responsive and updated on important happenings
is one of media’s power. But on the other hand, media has also its pros and cons.

Different types and forms of media are screaming everywhere, making people’s
creative minds work in accessing information easily with just one click. But media like
any other channel, has its
downside. As easy as
getting pieces of
information with one click,
media can also break
people’s lives with just
one post. Opinions and
sentiments are also
limited in media. Even
though you can practice
your freedom of
expression, you can still
experience harassment
and judgment from other
people’s comments on your posts. ©http://jennypanadobedazzlingphilstein.blogspot.com/2012/01/think-before-
you-click.html
Cyberbullying is also present in social media. And who can forget the booming
fake news that can easily be shared online?

“Think before you click” – a very familiar cliché that stops everyone in committing
careless mistakes in social media. Most of us are not media literate. Media is created to
make people educated and be aware of what’s happening around us, but with our
irresponsible and unmindful actions, it’s becoming lethal to us. As a user of media, we
have to be mindful on what we share and post on the net. We have to remember that a
simple click can affect a large number of people.

Exercise 2: Below are some behaviors that a responsible and irresponsible media
and information user shows in the social media. Identify each behavior whether it

- Make a dummy account to stalk someone
- Keeping your profile private
- Taking a screenshot of someone’s Instagram
- Chatting with a stranger
- Complimenting a friend’s picture
- Giving your parents your password
- Gaining few but true friends online

Remember:

In this thriving society, media is a strong and powerful tool in providing information.
Media is already part of our daily lives. It entertains, informs, and impacts every
aspect of human activities. Without media, we will never be updated on the day-to-
day events that are happening in our surrounding. Though media is used to raise
awareness, it can be used to steer biases. In using media, we must follow some
rules and etiquettes. Information is powerful but we must not abuse it. We must
turn ourselves as responsible users. Always remember, “With great power comes
great responsibility”.
V. Reflection

In not less than five (5) sentences, discuss how you can be a responsible media and
information user in this time of pandemic.
