Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

Citing an Example of an Issue Showing the Power of Media and Information

I. Learning Competency (MELC)

Cite an example of an issue showing the power of media and information
to affect change

II. Background Information for Learners

Media has so much power on the individual and the
society. Along with the evolution of media and information,
people from all over the globe can communicate faster and
easier, transact businesses more efficiently and conveniently,
and disseminate information with lightning speed. However,
there always two sides of the coin – there are advantages and
disadvantages in everything, including the things we do that
involve media and information.
It should also be necessary to note that media has so much power in all aspects
of the society, as it can equally damage as well as build if not utilized wisely.

Power & Opportunities

Media and information undeniably hold power over citizens and offer a wide
range of opportunities in economic, social, educational, and political aspects of the
society. For example, a certain candidate for an election or a beauty queen can surely
gather enough supporters and win not just through their physical presence but also with
the number of followers in the social media. The same thing goes for people who
became famous overnight because their videos have gone viral. Whether positive or
negative fame, development, news or change, this is the power of media and
information – It can make or unmake a person, remove, change or topple an
organization or even change an entire culture.
This power is manifested in another breakthrough that came with the evolution of
media and has given birth to a new journalistic form called citizen journalism. Citizen
journalism is described as done by people without professional journalism training
(using) the tools of modern technology and the global distribution of the Internet to
create, augment, or fact-check media on their own or in collaboration with others. An
example of this is the You Scoop page on GMA News Online where ordinary citizens
can submit news articles, pictures, and videos that the viewers or the general public
think is newsworthy and should make it to the headlines.
On the other hand, among the examples that display the opportunity in media
and information are: Online selling and online shopping, advertising, citizen journalism
and many more. Nowadays, people can do business online, transact with customers
faster and advertise their products on various platforms which provide people with
business and job opportunities and more choices for consumers.
Challenges (Threats, Risks, Abuse, and Misuse)
Consequently, there are also threats, risks, and abuse and misuse in dealing with
media and information. As technological advancements make it easier for us to
communicate, it equally adds efficiency to cybercrimes and other forms of threats, risks
and abuses which are done online. Among which are fraud social networks, identity
theft, phishing, and hacking.
Identity theft is the fraudulent acquisition and use of a person's private identifying
information, usually for financial gain. Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain
sensitive information or data, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by
disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Hacking is an
attempt to exploit a computer system or a private network inside a computer. Simply
put, it is the unauthorized access to or control over computer network security systems
for some illicit purpose.
Users, as well as producers of media and information should always keep in
mind their responsibilities and ethics to maximize and use fairly, the opportunities and
power of media and information.

Exercise 3

Sample Answer: (Answers may vary)

The National Elections is one very concrete example that displays the power of
media. Due to the fact that the media is the people’s source of information, the chances
of winning an electoral race largely depend on how popular a candidate is. In the same
way, bad popularity can also result to the downfall of a politician.
Although it offers job and business opportunities to people such as campaign
advertisers, PR staff and publicity personnel, one of the major challenges of this event
is the truthfulness of the information sent by the media entities. Misinformation also
poses a threat to this national event as there are limitless sources of information
especially in the social media.
It is hard to avoid the challenges of this event as the media is always protected
by the constitutional right, freedom of speech. In most cases, they may abuse this and
may be hard for the government to control them.
Nonetheless, it is most certain that the success of the National Elections in
putting the right people to office would largely depend on the people’s ability to be
media and information literate to be able to discern who are honest, competent, and has
the ability to lead the country to peace, security, progress and development.
