SAP.ERP.is.an.enterprise.resource.planning.software.developed.by.the.company.SAP.SE..ERP,.
or.enterprise.resource.planning,.software.is.modular.software.made.to.integrate.the.main.functio
ns.of.an.organization's.core.business.processes.into.a.unified.system..ERP.software.will.cover.all

What.does.SAP.stand.for?
The.original.name.for.SAP.when.translated.was.System.Analysis.and.Program.Development.and
.is.initialized.as.SAP..Because.SAP.is.an.initial,.it.is.pronounced.as.individual.letters,.not.an.acro

.which.is.similar.to.the.U.S..version.of.Inc.

SAP.SE.is.a.multinational.software.corporation.and.is.a.market.leader.in.the.ERP.field..The.com
pany.currently.serves.more.than.180.countries,.and.a.majority.of.the.customers.are.small.and.me

dium-sized.businesses.(SMB)..The.company.offers.on-
premises,.cloud.and.hybrid.deployment.models,.with.cloud.computing.options.being.a.focus.for.t
he.company's.future.--.supported.by.SAP.data.centers.

What.is.SAP.enterprise.resource.planning.(ERP)?
SAP.SE.is.one.of.the.largest.vendors.of.ERP.software.and.related.enterprise.applications..The.co
mpany's.ERP.system.enables.its.customers.to.run.their.business.processes,.including.accounting,.
sales,.production,.human.resources.and.finance,.in.an.integrated.environment..It.is.also.considere
d.a.backbone.of.the.SAP.software.offerings..The.integration.ensures.that.information.flows.from.
one.SAP.component.to.another.without.the.need.for.redundant.data.entry.and.helps.enforce.finan
cial,.process.and.legal.controls..It.also.facilitates.the.effective.use.of.resources,.including.manpo
wer,.machines.and.production.capacities.

SAP.ERP.software.has.different.main.modules,.which.are.separated.into.functional.modules.and.
technical.modules..SAP's.functional.modules.include:

 Human.Capital.Management.(SAP.HCM)

 Production.Planning.(SAP.PP)

 Materials.Management.(SAP.MM)

 Project.System.(SAP.PS)

 Sales.and.Distribution.(SAP.SD)

 Plant.Maintenance.(SAP.PM)

 Finance.and.controlling.(SAP.FICO)

 Quality.Management.(SAP.QM)

The.SAP.ERP.software.system,.called.SAP.ERP.Central.Component.
(SAP.ECC),.is.the.collective.term.for.SAP's.functional.and.technical.modules.that.enable.enterpr
ises.to.manage.business.processes.through.a.unified.system..ECC.is.the.on-
premises.version.of.SAP,.and.it.is.usually.implemented.in.medium-.and.large-
sized.companies..For.smaller.companies,.SAP.offers.its.Business.One.ERP.platform.

8.|.P a g e
SAP.also.has.cross-
application.components,.such.as.enterprise.document.management.systems.and.product.lifecycle
.management.(PLM),.which.can.be.implemented.with.any.of.the.main.modules.

How.does.the.SAP.ERP.system.work?
The.SAP.ERP.system.is.often.arranged.in.a.three-tier,.client-
server.architecture..This.set.up.is.recommended.because.it.enables.flexibility.and.increased.scala
bility..The.three.tiers.used.by.the.SAP.ERP.software.include:.the.presentation.tier,.the.applicatio
n.tier.and.the.database.tier.

The.presentation.tier.provides.the.user.with.the.SAP.graphical.user.interface.
(SAP.GUI)..The.SAP.GUI.can.be.installed.on.any.computer.that.use.Microsoft.Windows.OS.or.
Mac.OS..The.SAP.GUI.is.the.point.of.communication.between.the.user.and.the.SAP.ERP.syste
m.

The.application.tier.is.the.core.of.the.SAP.ERP.system..This.tier.is.responsible.for.processing.cli
ent.transactions,.executing.business.logic,.running.reports,.monitoring.access.to.the.database,.pri
nting.jobs.and.communicating.with.other.applications.

The.database.tier.is.where.both.the.business.generated.data.and.SAP.application.programs.are.st
ored.

When.working.together,.the.application.tier.will.receive.the.input.and.then.send.the.information.t
o.the.presentation.tier..The.presentation.will.display.the.output.in.the.SAP.GUI..This.data.is.then
.stored.in.the.database.tier.

All.processes.that.are.started.or.stopped.within.the.SAP.ERP.system.are.called.SAP.instances..E
ach.instance.possesses.a.dispatcher.and.various.work.processes..The.dispatcher.allocates.tasks.to
.one.of.the.work.processes..The.SAP.ERP.system.has.different.work.processes.to.match.with.diff
erent.tasks..These.work.processes.include:

 dialogue.work.processes.for.managing.online.transaction.requests.from.users;

9.|.P a g e
 update.work.processes.that.perform.updates.in.the.database;

 spool.work.processes,.which.enable.printing.in.the.SAP.system;

 batch.work.processes.that.process.any.background.jobs.scheduled.in.the.system;.and

 gateway.work.processes,.which.enable.communication.between.applications,.such.as.betwee
n.SAP.R/3.and.SAP.R/2.

While.the.SAP.ERP.system.can.contain.several.application.instances,.there.must.always.be.one.s
pecial,.central.instance.
(CI)..The.CI.has.two.components:.the.message.process.and.the.enqueue.server..The.message.pro
cess.establishes.communication.between.the.application.instances.in.the.SAP.system..The.enque
ue.server.manages.locks.on.the.database.tables.

Beyond.this.breakdown,.there.are.several.application.modules.that.make.up.the.SAP.ERP.system
..Each.module.is.designed.to.accommodate.the.SAP.application.programs.and.specific.business.
data.related.to.a.particular.area.of.business.

Advantages.and.disadvantages.of.the.SAP.ERP.system
Advantages.of.SAP.ERP.include:

 The.standardization.of.an.organization's.business.processes;

 The.ability.to.integrate.with.other.third-party.systems.and.perform.enterprise.wide.services;

 The.flexibility.to.create.custom.rules.with.the.SAP.structure.that.set.the.parameters.for.transa
ctions;.and

 Various.analytical.features.--.such.as.reporting.and.decision-
making.--.that.enable.SAP.to.meet.the.needs.of.various.complex.businesses.and.government.
organizations.

Disadvantages.of.SAP.ERP.include:

10.|.P a g e
 The.high.cost.of.purchasing.and.implementing.the.program,.including.buying.the.software.a
nd.hardware,.labor.costs.of.internal.IT.employees.and.external.consultants,.the.costs.of.traini
ng.employees.and.the.residual.costs.for.software.maintenance.and.periodic.upgrades;.and

 The.complexity.of.the.system.means.most.companies.will.only.implement.one.feature.of.the.
SAP.ERP.software.at.a.time,.causing.the.complete.implementation.of.the.software.to.take.up
.to.several.years.
SAP.software.uses:
SAP.software.is.used.to.assist.companies.with.the.management.of.business.areas,.such.as.finance
s,.logistics.and.human.resources..The.SAP.ERP.can.be.used.with.other.application.software.that.
supports.specific,.complex.business.functionality;.this.is.called.the.SAP.Business.Suite.

The.SAP.Business.Suite.is.a.bundle.of.business.applications.that.provides.integration.of.business
.and.processes,.as.well.as.industry-
focused.functionality..This.bundle.is.based.on.SAP.ERP,.but.also.includes.modules.for.CRM,.PL
M,.supply.chain.management.(SCM).and.supplier.relationship.management.
(SRM)..SAP.customers.can.choose.to.run.Business.Suite.on.SAP.HANA.

S/4HANA.is.the.vendor's.in-
memory.version.of.the.Business.Suite.ERP.platform.that.was.released.in.2015..It.is.an.ambitious.
rewrite.of.the.Business.Suite.optimized.for.the.HANA.platform..S/
4HANA.is.meant.to.reduce.complexity,.according.to.SAP,.and.to.replace.SAP.ECC,.eventually.

SAP.S/4HANA.Cloud.is.a.SaaS.version.of.S/4HANA,.presenting.the.advantages.of.HANA's.in-
memory.processing.and.real-
time.data.accessibility.within.a.SaaS.model,.meaning.users.can.access.all.of.the.software's.functi
onality.

SAP.also.has.industry-
specific.applications.that.support.business.processes.unique.to.particular.industries..Some.of.thes
e.applications.are:

 SAP.for.Utilities

11.|.P a g e
 SAP.for.Insurance

 SAP.for.Oil.and.Gas

 SAP.Healthcare
SAP.user.groups:
An.important.part.of.SAP's.information.dissemination.and.engagement.has.been.itsuser.groups..
These.are.independent,.not-for-
profit.groups.designed.to.help.educate.members,.create.customer.involvement,.give.voices.to.use
rs.in.influencing.SAP.strategy.and.provide.networking.opportunities..Here,.SAP.employees.and.
users.can.meet.and.share.information,.experiences.and.lessons.learned.

Arguably.more.important,.SAP.hears.user.feedback.in.both.the.technical.areas.and.the.functional
.areas..User.groups.are.organized.by.region.across.the.globe,.with.Americas'.SAP.Users'.Group.
(ASUG),.being.the.largest.

What.is.SAP.in.real.life?
Using.the.SAP.HANA.platform,.Karma.Automotive's.vision.is.to.deliver.a.cloud-

How.COVID-
19.Has.Changed.Consumer.Behaviors.And.The.Supply.Chains.That
.Serve.Them

As.COVID-
19.continues.to.affect.our.lives.and.forces.us.to.change.our.daily.routines,.our.shopping.habits.ar
e.evolving..As.I.look.at.my.monthly.bills,.most.of.them.are.for.necessities.such.as.food,.and.very
.little.is.on.luxury.or.discretionary.items..According.to.McKinsey,.this.“conscious.consumption”.
has.been.a.widely.adopted.behavior.and.purchases.are.mainly.centered.on.basic.needs.

Buyers,.through.necessity,.have.started.to.use.online.shopping...Generations.that.previously.woul
d.not.have.dreamed.of.buying.something.online.as.they.have.to.“feel.and.touch”.something.befor
e.they.buy.it,.are.realizing.that.the.comfort.of.reaching.various.goods.with.one.click.and.picking.
up.the.groceries.from.the.front.door,.has.its.benefits.

The.challenges.of.a.Covid-19.world:

All.of.this.of.course.has.had.a.dramatic.impact.on.the.supply.chains.that.service.this.market..

For.the.past.few.months.uncertainty.about.demand,.unstable.supply.and.constrained.capacity.hav
e.been.the.biggest.challenge.around.the.globe.

The.pandemic.has.clearly.shown.us.that.an.effective.running.supply.chain.should.focus.not.only.
the.cost.factor.but.also.balancing.this.with.managing.risk.by.improving.resiliency.and.agility.to.c
ope.with.such.demand.and.supply.disruptions.

As.a.result,.we.have.seen.companies.re-design.and.re-think.supply.chain.processes.

Last.Mile.Delivery:

13.|.P a g e
My.monthly.bills.show.that.I.am.ordering.90%.of.the.things.I.buy.on-
line..Let’s.just.walk.backwards.through.the.supply.chain.to.see.how.this.shift.has.affected.the.pro
cesses.that.make.this.happen..

As.more.and.more.people.expect.a.delivery.to.their.doorstep,.the.volume.and.size.of.shipments.h
ave.changed.considerably..This.was.highlighted.in.a.recent.podcast.with.Lorcan.Sheehan,.the.fou
nder.and.CEO.of.PerformanSC,.who.discussed.how.supply.chains.have.been.“shocked”.by.the.C
OVID-19.crisis..

“I.think.the.other.big.change.that.we.will.continue.to.see.is.the.shift.in.channels,”.said.Lorcan..“
That.has.been.happening.for.quite.some.time..There.will.be.new.ways.of.getting.products.into.co
nsumer.hands..There.will.be.new.marketplaces.that.will.exist..There.will.be.new.ways.that.consu
mers.can.interact.more.directly.with.the.companies.”

Recently,.businesses.are.more.focused.on.enhancing.the.last.mile.capabilities.to.suit.changes.whi
le.both.protecting.the.customers.and.the.delivery.personnel..Contactless.delivery.has.become.a.b
uzzword.during.the.crisis,.and.it.is.unlikely.to.disappear.in.the.post-.COVID-19.world.

In.China,.delivery.app.Meituan.Dianping.launched.a.contactless.delivery.initiative.across.various
.districts.to.send.grocery.orders.by.using.autonomous.vehicles..In.Ireland,.Manna.Aero.received.
a.license.from.the.Irish.Aviation.Authority.to.do.drone.deliveries.for.a.restaurant.chain.in.Dublin
..If.you.order.your.meal.using.the.Camile.Thai.restaurant.app,.you.can.drop.a.pin.where.you.wan

oted.and.delivered.groceries.and.medicines.to.vulnerable.people.in.lockdown.

Pop-up.Warehouses:

With.the.extreme.fluctuations.and.changes.in.customer.demand.during.the.crisis,.pop-
up.warehouses.have.become.an.ideal.solution.for.rapid.order.fulfillment..Renting.and.stocking.th
e.warehouses.close.to.the.end.consumers.is.the.time.and.cost-
effective.way.to.process,.especially.when.there.is.a.peak.in.demand.
14.|.P a g e
Richard.Kirker,.Global.Solution.Lead.for.Extended.Warehouse.Management.at.SAP,.explained.t
he.scope.of.Pop-
up.Warehouses.in.our.supply.chain.podcast.and.said.“The.idea.with.pop.up.warehouses.is.not.jus

much.as.functionally.you.like.with.the.full.EWM.
(Extended.Warehouse.Management).software.”

Planning.and.Simulation:

What.we.see.as.a.result.of.COVID-
19.is.not.only.the.importance.of.data,.but.more.importantly.the.ability.to.leverage.it.to.generate.d
ifferent.scenarios.and.make.more.agile.decisions.across.the.supply.chain.

By.using.integrated.business.planning.capabilities,.businesses.can.optimize.their.resource.efficie

4..Revamp.Performance.Efficiency:
The.ERP.system.excludes.repetitive.operations.and.significantly.lowers.the.need.to.manually.ent
er.data,.which.not.only.helps.user.productivity.but.also.reduces.the.chance.of.erroneous.data.that.
could.result.in.costly.business.errors..The.adoption.of.the.ERP.system.will.also.enhance.day-to-
day.company.operations.by.streamlining.business.processes,.making.it.simpler.and.more.effectiv
e.for.businesses.to.gather.information,.regardless.of.where.they.work..It.is.kind.of.an.added.featu
re,.envisioned.to.keep.businesses.on.track,.to.notice.every.detail.and.to.make.working.life.simple
r.and.more.effective,.from.users.of.the.software.to.customers.
5..Integration.with.Other.Value.Chain.Participants:
ERP.concept.goes.beyond.the.limits.of.business.by.integrating.other.members.of.the.value.chain:
.customers.and.suppliers..The.company.thus.becomes.a.major.partner.that.can.benefit.from.a.co
mpetitive.advantage.by.actively.engaging.in.the.design.and.development.of.new.products.that.ad
d.value.to.their.experience..As.far.as.customers.are.concerned,.ERP.empowers.you.to.get.more.i
nformation.and.higher.quality.that.lets.you.adjust.production.orders.and.purchase.your.requireme
nts..On.the.other.hand,.we.will.get.a.segmented.database.of.our.customers.that.will.make.it.possi
ble.for.us.to.carry.out.marketing.campaigns.targeting.specific.segments.
6..Excessive.Mobility:
The.benefit.of.enterprise.resource.planning.software.is.its.capacity.to.put.customers.at.the
.core.of.its.attention,.offering.deployment.styles.that.will.bring.street.sales.reps.the.same.

possibilities.as.in-
office.customers.to.use.ERP.wherever.they.need.to..With.ERP.software,.users.can.access.
a.centralized.database.from.anywhere.they.work.and.from.a.range.of.devices,.such.as.you
r.laptop,.tablet.or.cell.phone..The.adaptability.of.ERP.software.is.vital.because.it.improve
s.productivity.and.makes.data.available.wherever.you.may.be.\
7..Highly.Customizable:
Since.the.demands.of.each.business.are.unique,.each.business.gets.a.tailored.system..It.ta
kes.into.account.operational.and.departmental.specifications..ERP.systems.are.easy,.flexi
ble.and.adaptable..This.implies.that.it.is.simple.for.every.employee.to.use.it..It.is.adaptive
.because.varying.system.modules.exist.for.different.departments,.including.sales.and.distr
ibution,.product.management,.finance,.and.staff.management.modules.
It.is.adaptable.because.the.system.is.available.via.mobile.devices..Employees.or.manage
ment.can,.therefore,.use.the.software.from.almost.anywhere.
8..Absolute.Analysis.and.Forecasting:
It.is.difficult.to.depend.on.people.that.can.provide.accurate.information.evaluation.along.
with.reports..The.ERP.system.takes.away.the.risk.because.there.is.no.duplication.of.data..
The.system.offers.real-
time.reports.of.every.trivial.thing.that.takes.place.in.a.business..It.serves.risk.assessment,.
as.well.as.performance.reports..It.reviews.purchases.and.alterations.in.inventory.as.they’r
e.happening..Enterprise.resource.planning.software.provides.customers.and,.most.notably
,.managers.with.the.tools.and.resources.required.to.make.more.exact.forecasts.
9.Reliable.Customer.Service:
Adequate.execution.of.the.ERP.enables.us.to.pay.attention.to.the.customer.in.a.very.short
.period.of.time..Keeping.your.customers.satisfied.while.handling.your.sales.and.inventor
y.effectively.can.be.a.daunting.job.if.you.have.your.customer.and.inventory.data.stored.o
n.separate.systems.
ERP.helps.to.keep.up-to-
date.information.while.making.it.easier.to.update.all.data.in.real-
time..This.will.help.customers.to.access.accurate,.up-to-
date.information.and.to.cope.effectively.with.their.customers..It.also.provides.us.a.much.
quicker.traceability.feature.
10..Security.Assurance:
ERP.facilitates.enhanced.security.of.the.company’s.IT.systems..Core.business.data.will.b
e.adequately.secured.in.two.respects:.for.the.purposes.of.information.theft.or.unauthorize
d.access,.and.data.security..All.other.alternatives.integrate.different.levels.of.access.or.aut
horization..On.the.other.hand,.the.information.is.centralized.and.the.backups.are.schedule
d.automatically.to.prevent.any.failure..In.the.situation.of.cloud.solutions,.data.security.is.
even.higher.to.be.duplicated.to.separate.locations.
.

Conclusion:

There.is.a.limiting.factor,.and.this.brings.us.full.circle..Small.suppliers.do.need.to.integrate.with.
their.larger.suppliers’.ERP.systems,.but.their.internal.processes.and.requirements.will.often.be.v
ery.different..Many.will.buy.the.ERP.application.that.most.suits.their.internal.use.and.seek.to.int
egrate.it.with.whatever.applications.are.used.by.organisations.they.trade.with..In.other.words,.tie
r-
two.fragmentation.of.ERP.is.not.just.something.that.exists.in.large.organisations,.it.is.also.a.fact.
of.life.across.broader.business.communities..The.interests.of.ERP.users.are.so.diverse.that.the.m
arket.will.continue.to.support.a.wide.range.of.products,.including.those.for.enterprise-
wide.needs.and.those.for.specialist.niches,.and.the.various.products.will.always.need.to.talk.to.ea
ch.other.at.some.level.

While.SAP.has.the.largest.marketshare.for.ERP.applications,.there.still.leaves.a.lot.of.share.for.o
ther.suppliers,.the.names.of.which.may.not.trip.off.the.tongue..It.can.be.hard.to.find.out.where.th
e.applications.of.some.of.the.smaller.players.are.being.used.

Tying.down.ERP.market.share.is.tricky..Large.enterprises.also.buy.mid-
market.products..That.is.not.to.say.they.ignore.the.big.players,.but.they.select.certain.products.to.
fit.niches.that.SAP.and.Oracle.do.not.serve.well..SearchManufacturingERP.com.gives.the.examp
le.of.French.company.Areva.using.Infor.SiteLine.for.site.operations.alongside.SAP.for.its.financ
