Lab Safety Rules
1. ALWAYS wear an apron or protective clothing when working with chemicals.
2. ALWAYS tie back loose hair.
3. ALWAYS wear goggles or safety glasses to prevent getting materials in your
eyes.
4. ALWAYS read the labels on chemicals and heed all warnings.
5. NEVER eat, drink, or smell the chemicals. Rather carefully "fan" the fumes to
your nose.
6. NEVER look directly into a test tube or flask. Look at the contents from the
side.
7. NEVER play around during experiments. 6. ALWAYS wash your hands after
handling lab materials.
Blood Specimen Collection

Blood can be collected from 3 different sources:


I.Venipuncture (Venous blood)
II.Arterial blood.
III.Capillary blood
1-Venipuncture (Venous blood)

Most commonly required ….WHY??

 Because majority of routine tests are performed on venous


blood.
Blood can be taken directly from the vein.
Forearm vein
median cubital and basillic vein are recommended in blood collection
Hand vein

If difficult to obtain from


Forearm vein other chose is
Dorsum of hand vein
BLOOD COLLECTION TOOLS

1. Gloves
2. Tourniquet
3. Syringe
4. Cotton
5. Alcohol (70%)
6. Blood tube
7. Plaster
Procedure:
1. Put the Tourniquet around the arm.

2. Touch and feel vein to select the best one.

3. Sterilize area with alcohol allow it to dry.

4. Insert needle parallel to vein at 45 degree and when the blood drop in the
syringe appear start filling it.

5. Remove the tourniquet and open patient hand then draw the needle gently.

6. Press the site of injection with piece of cotton for a minutes.

7. Put the blood slowly into blood tube and label it.
2-Arterial blood

 Collect by physicians only


 Required for estimation of blood
gases (ABG): PH, CO2 and O2.
3- Capillary blood
To draw only a small amount of blood from capillary

Materials Procedure:
1. Disposable gloves
2. Cotton 1. Select finger.
3. Alcohol (70%) 2. Cleanse the site with alcohol.
4. Capillary tube
5. Disposable lancet 3. Insert lancet into the tip of finger.
4. Full capillary tube with blood.
