I once was floated to a unit that I had never worked in and i wasn’t sure where supplies were

located. The mother of the patient did not recognize me as a regular floor nurse on the unit and this
already made the family leery of me from the start of the shift. I continually had to prove myself
throughout the day because as nurses we all do things slightly differently. There is not always a
wrong way or a right way to do things but in this case, there was a policy to be followed. I followed it
and apparently my dressing change was slightly different than previous ones. I communicated
regularly with the charge nurse and she came to check in with the family to address any issues in
real-time.

I love working in a team. I truly believe that when a team is functioning correctly that it is greater
than the sum of its parts. More work just seems to get done than would be if we were working
independently. That’s why whenever I see a team member struggling I always reach out and try to
help for the good of the team. While working with MSF-FRANCE as a Nurse, there were one occasion
when our company get high number of patient admitted due to Malaria epidemic.

That day i was the nurse on morning shifts, after I finished my shift I handed the ward to Nurse on
afternoon shift, but before leaving i noticed new patients keep coming and their number keep
increasing so I notice the workload was too much for my colleague to handle alone. Then I
approached my manager to ask if I could stay and assist my colleagues and other staff for the next
shift. He agreed and we divide the ward in to two, i manage the Triage Station while the Nurse on
duty manage the admitted patients

The first thing I do when I get to work is set up a schedule. At the very top, I make a list of all the
Patients that needs urgent attention and below less critical patient and to manage my time I usually
used the Nursing process approaches which are Assessment, Diagnosis, planning, implementation
and evaluation.

There were a time when i was told to manage 20 patients in 6 hours shift, considering the number of
patients and time-bound i used my Nursing process approaches, first i assessed all the 20 patients
and after that I divided them into three grouped based on their diagnosis, then I developed a care
plan based on the three diagnosis, after that I then implemented the planned, and after the
evaluation I found out that I archived my objectives one hour before the expected time.

During my first employment as a Nurse, my supervisor asked me to increase my Triage speed. This
feedback came as a surprise since I did not think I was slow at the Triage station, which I believed
was above average for a fresh graduate Nurse. Initially, I felt a bit defensive. Then I thought that,
rather than react, I should assess and compared my Triage speed with the other interns to see where
my skills landed. I was surprised to see that my Triage speed was only 5 patiens per hour while
others can Triage 8 per hour. After receiving the feedback and seeing the results of my Triage skills, I
started doing extra shifts and taking online classes every day. It didn't take me long to improve, and
now I triage 10 patients per hour with high accuracy.
