" " Who is the character that touched you the most?

The mother of Baki, Akezawa Emi, is the most touching character .

—Please tell us if there is a character who acted on its own?

ITAGAKI: | can say the answer is main characters. All regular characters are so. It's easy to make stories. When | start
working, | can see my work with a distance.
EXCLUSIVE -Thinking about it, the motherofBaki, Akezawa Emi, is the most touching character of all because her character acted
KEISUKE ITAGAKI INTERVIEW on its own.

ITAGAKI: | let her go through the mill as | decided that she became a suitable mother at the end ofthe fight between
Baki and Yuujiro. But even now | have a feeling that l didn't write the action that she took as a mother to protect Baki,
SPECIALLY DONE FOR THE WILD which is the feeling that Emi acted on her will.

ALEX SMITH —The end of Emiwas that she awoke to the motherhood, stood up against Vujiro, and got killed, but this episode was
decided from the beginning?
ITAGAKI: | haven't decided how she becomes a mother, but if she stands up against Vujiro and hits the face, this
means she determines the death of herself. So l was hesitating about writing that scene.
—That means you didn't decide until the last moment how you were going to end the story?
ITAGAKI: At that moment, the deadline was just around the corner, and ifl put a totally different picture in the space
where Emi tried to hit Yuujiro, she still could go on with life. Of course | could have chosen this story. | held my hand
when | realized that mv writing the scene of hitting him meant Emi was going to die.
1 remember, І was alone in my room for a while, and І finished that scene if was making a serious decision. That's
why 1 still remember very well. | couldn't help crying at that moment.
—The death of EMI must have been avery touching moment for you.
ITAGAKI: It was the most touching moment in my career as acreator, and | still regret that this scene wasn't something
happy, such as abirth of something or an accomplishment.

But this is all about making a story. And I realized: | can experience feelings and sensations while | am making a story.
I was an apprentice to Mr. Kazuo Koike (Crying Freeman. Lone wolf &cub) who said that the characters live in the
story, and | always think they do live and try to let them live, but at that moment | really thought they do live in the story.
The death of Emi gave me a deep wound or feeling as if| lost somebody | care about so much.
Generally, it takes long time to invent names (titles) or story, but when I was writing several episodes on Emi's death,
everything seemed to finish within short time. The very same evening after finishing my work, |came up with the name
(title). So much I could get into the story, but | had afeeling that it wasn't my will but the story made me fall for. It was a
totally special and unique experience.
