Short Story Writing

A story is a fictional or factual narrative. Stories inspire us and even make us

question our views. Story writing is an art form. It requires a lot of creative
thinking, planning and mastery of narrative skills and language. A short story
should be as direct and concise as possible because it is intended to be read in one
sitting. It should be written in an easily understandable grammatical structure.

STEPS FOR WRITING A STORY:

1. Identify the character. Any story always revolves around its main character.

2. Create a problem for your character.

3. Give a solution to the problem.

4. Twist - bring an interesting twist to the story. (Add multiple solutions and
twists based on your imagination.)

5. The final step is the final solution for your character. (Try to give a happy
ending to your story.)

7. Don’t overuse the words ‘Then’ or ‘But’ instead try using words like
afterwards, however, later, subsequently, yet, etc..

8. The moral of your story should come out naturally.

Q. Write a story in 150 - 200 words with the help of the following beginning. Give
it a suitable title.

On a sunny winter afternoon, I was sipping coffee from my favourite mug when
suddenly….
