WHAT IS A FILE EXTENSION
Your computer has many different types of files
on it, and each one has its own file extension. A
file extension is a three- or four-letter identifier
found at the end of a file name and following a
period. These extensions tell you about the
characteristics of a file and its use. In this
lesson, we'll go over some examples of these
extensions.
WHAT IS
PORTABLE NETWORK GRAPHICS
The PNG file format is widely used on websites to
display high-quality digital images. Created to
exceed the performance of GIF files, PNGs offer not
just lossless compression, but also a much broader
and brighter color palette.
PNG ADVANTAGE S
Lossless compression: Images don't lose detail or
quality after compression.
Supports a large number of colours: the format is
suitable for different types of digital images, including
photographs and graphics.
Support for transparency: PNG image files support
multi-level transparency. You can adjust opacity
levels from completely transparent to opaque
Perfect for editing images: lossless compressions
makes it perfect for storing digital images for editing.
OTHER IMAGE EXTENSION
JPEG
JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP

DISAVANTAGE S
Quality of Image is reduced after JPEG compression
owing to the loss of actual content of the image.
JPEG image compression is not suitable for images
with sharp edges and lines.
JPEG image format is not capable of handling
animated graphic images;
JPEG images do not support layered images.
TFF
TAGGED IMAGE FILE FORMAT

DISAVANTAGE S
Detail and resolution leads to TIFF’s being quite large
files. They can take up valuable space on your drive.
Their size makes them difficult to share or send.
Their high quality makes them poor choice for web
design, since detailed images can slow a website
loading speed.
PSD
PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT

DISAVANTAGE S
PSD files can be quite large, especially for high-
resolution images and complex designs.
These files are specific to Adobe Photoshop, and not
all image editing software can open and edit them.
PSD files cannot be published to a website as it will
have to be converted to another format. Eg.
JPEG/PNG
EPS
ENCAPSULATED POSTSCRIPT

DISAVANTAGE S
EPS files are primarily designed for vector graphics
and are not suitable for storing photographs
EPS files can be quite large, especially for high-
resolution images and complex designs.
EPS files are not compatible with some editing
software hence not allow users to view or edit.
PDF
PORTABLE DOCUMENT FORMAT.

DISAVANTAGE S
The files can be difficult to edit.
They are typically letter sized, which can make it difficult to
see a full
page at a time and can require more scrolling and zooming.
PDFs tend to be less engaging than other web content.
They are not always accessible to screen readers.
GIF
GRAPHICS INTERCHANGE FORMAT.

DISAVANTAGE S
The GIF file format only supports a palette of 256 colors,
meaning
images may have a low resolution or even look slightly blurry.
Because they use multiple images, animated GIF files can
sometimes be tricky to return to and edit.
Although GIFs are generally small and quick to load, a slow
internet connection could delay or negatively affect their
appearance on a webpage.
