sound

chapter 11
MADE BY:ALISHA KASHIF (6S)
introduction
sounds are all around us. we use sound to
communicate, to warn others of danger &
for enjoyment. animals also use sounds to
communicate, to warn others of danger,
to try to stop other to enter their
territory, or to hunt. some animals even
use sound to help them to find their way
around or to find prey when they can't
see.
HOW DIFFERENT SOUNDS ARE MADE?

SOME SOUNDS ARE LOUD AND SOME ARE SOFT. THIS IS THE
INTENSITY OF THE SOUND. SOUNDS WITH A HIGH INTENSITY
ARE OFTEN SAID TO HAVE A HIGH VOLUME.
SOUNDS CAN ALOS BE HIGH OR LOW. THIS IS THE PITCH OF
THE SOUND. THE PITCH AND THE VOLUME OF THE SOUND
DEPEND ON THE WAY AN OBJECT VIBRATES TO MAKE A
SOUND. GENERALLY, SMALLER OBJECTS VIBRATE FASTER &
MAKE NOTES WITH HIGHER PITCHES. THE NUMBER OF
VIBRATES EACH SOUND IS CALLED THE FREQUENCY. THE
VOLUME OF A NOTE DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF A VIBRATION IS
ITS AMPLITUDE. THE BIGGER THE AMPLITUDE, THE LOUDER
THE NOTE.
sound can travel through a medium (a solid. a liquid, a
gas). it can't travel through a vacuum (a completely
empty space).
the moving vibrations from a sound wave. the air
particles are squashed together in some places these
places have higher pressure. the particles are spread
our in other places these places have lower pressure.
the frequency of a sound wave is the
number od waves passing per second.

the amplitude of the wave is the distance

moved by the air particles as the sound wave
passes.
SPEED OF SOUND
sound travels at different speed in different materials. the
vibrations are passed on more easily when the particles in a
materials are closer together, so sounds travel faster in
liquids than in gases.
