MET-305 : Mechanical Measurement & Control System

Course Objective:
• To develop the knowledge of basics of Measurements, Metrology
and Measuring devices
• To understand the basic types of measurements in the real
time engineering applications
• To make familiar with the mechanical measuring systems, and
the standard measurement methods
• To select suitable mechanical measuring instruments for basic
and special requirement in the industries
• To develop competence in sensors, transducers and terminating
devices with associated parameters

Description of a simple CNC control system, Interpolation systems.
Features available in a CNC system – Introduction to some widely
used CNC control systems. Types of measuring systems in CNC
machines – Incremental and absolute rotary encoders, linear
scale – resolver – Linear induction – Magnetic Sensors for
Spindle Orientation. Qualified and pre-set tooling – Principles of
location – Principles of clamping – Work holding devices.

Course Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Understand the methods of measurement and selection of
measuring instruments, standards of measurement
• Apply methods of measurement for various physical
quantities.
• Explain tolerance, limits of size, fits, geometric and
position tolerances and gauge design
• Develop an ability of problem solving and decision making
by identifying and analyzing the cause for variation and
recommend suitable corrective actions for quality
improvement
