HST-3000 Firmware USB Upgrade to version 8.06.

02

Overview

The following document describes the steps required to upgrade an HST-3000(c) Communications Analyzer to
firmware version 8.06.02. Please read the following procedure before beginning the upgrade process. Failure
to follow any steps correctly will most likely result in a failed upgrade.

Prerequisites

1) HST-3000 or HST-3000C Mainframe connected to an AC power source.

2) USB thumb drive, 1G or larger (formatted for FAT or FAT32, with partition table)

3) Windows PC with Internet Explorer (IE) v8 or higher.

Note 1: To verify your USB Drive will work with the HST, insert the drive into your HST and verify that the File
Explorer can view the drive. To use File Explorer:
a. With the HST powered off, insert the USB drive.
b. Power on the HST.
c. Press the System Navigation button.
d. Press 1 or OK to open the File Manager

e. If USB Storage is present, your USB drive is viewable by the HST. If USB Storage is not present,
the USB drive needs to be reformatted to use a FAT32-based file system.

Note 2: Do not attempt to upgrade HST3000(c)s having firmware below 5.00.40 using USB upgrade method.
Firmware revision can be viewed by going to System > Tools > Options/Revs/Copyright. Firmware revision
will appear at the top of the screen.

Instructions for upgrading the HST-3000(c) Firmware to version 8.06.02:

1. Using a PC having access to the Internet, launch Windows Explorer.


Note: Google Chrome and Firefox browsers will not be able to access the ftp site.

2. In the address bar type in the following ftp address: ftp://temp:temp@157.234.254.215

3. The ftp site should appear with a display of folder icons. If the display shows a list of dates, times, and
directories, STOP before proceeding as you will need to configure the view of this site to display folder
icons by performing the following steps:

a. From Internet Explorer click on Tools and then click on Internet Options.
b. On the Internet Options pop up box, click on the Advanced tab.
c. In the Browsing section, ensure there is a check mark in the box next to Enable FTP folder
view (outside of Internet Explorer). If the box is unchecked, place a check mark in the box
and then click on Apply and then re-launch your Internet Explorer to the ftp address.
d. If you are using IE7 or IE8, on the right side of the screen click PAGE. If you are using IE9 &
IE10, click ALT then select VIEW.

CAUTION: In the following step DO NOT click on the Inbound Folder icon.

e. In the drop-down box, click on Open FTP Site In Windows Explorer.


f. This will bring up a 2nd window with an INBOUND folder icon.
g. Perform a right click in the middle of the window. Do not click on the Inbound folder icon.
h. In the pop up box that appears click on LOGIN AS: and enter temp (lowercase) for both User
Name and Password.
i. Click on LOG ON.
j. You should now be at the ftp site with a view of folder icons.

4. Locate the folder called HST and double click into this folder.

5. Select all files by pressing Ctrl + A

6. Copy all files by pressing Ctrl + C.

7. Insert the USB drive into your PC.

8. Navigate to My Computer and double click into the USB thumb drive.

CAUTION: The upgrade files will NOT be recognized by the HST3000(c) if they are copied into a
folder on the USB thumb drive. Copy the upgrade files to the “root” directory of the USB thumb
drive.

9. Paste all copied files to the “root” of the USB thumb drive by pressing Ctrl + V.

10. Safely remove USB thumb drive from the PC. Use of the Windows “Eject” command is highly
recommended.

CAUTION: Ensure that the HST3000(c) is plugged into the AC adaptor and that the adaptor is
plugged into a working 110V AC outlet.

11. With the HST3000(c) powered off, insert the USB thumb drive into the top of the HST3000(c).

12. Power on the HST3000(c) and then press the System navigation button.

13. Press the soft key under the Instrument tab.

14. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the Software Update menu item, and press OK.

15. Press # 2 on keypad to enter the USB Flash Software Update selection.

16. Press OK to begin software update.

17. Your HST3000(c) will automatically boot back to the main Home screen when the upgrade is complete.

USB Upgrade Verification


1. Power the HST3000(c) on and then press the System navigation button.

2. Select the Options/Revs/Copyright menu selection on the Tools tab.

3. Verify firmware Revision 8.06.02.

Broadcom Modem Software Upgrade Instructions via USB

Instructions for upgrading the Broadcom modem software:

This instruction is for updating the HST-3000(C) Broadcom Modem driver software (sometimes referred to as
“PHY” software) on a Broadcom Bonded SIM for the HST-3000 (C) and is applicable to the following SIM model
types:

• HST3000-BDCM-WB2
• HST3000-BDCM-WB2-1
• HST3000-BDCM-WB2-2

Note 1: Updating the HST-3000(C) base unit firmware is a separate procedure, which must be completed prior
to updating the modem software – see instructions above.

To upgrade the modem driver(s), which include…

• MultiPHY (single pair ADSL or VDSL)


• VDSL Bonded
• ADSL Bonded
• MultiPHY Anx B (not critical to AT&T usage, but included here for completeness)

… insert the USB memory stick used for upgrading HST-3000 units to firmware version 8.06.09 (with file
structure intact) into the HST3000(C) USB slot on top of the unit and power the HST3000(C) on. Then follow
the instructions below:

1. Launch into the XDSL MODEM Emulation application.


2. Press the Display soft key and go to the Identity results page.

3. Select the Actions soft key and select item 1 – Update Modem Software – USB
4. The HST-3000(c) will check the USB stick for valid script files. An update for each script found on the
USB stick will appear in this dialog box. Press the soft key under Select All then press the Accept soft
key.

5. A dialog box will appear informing you that the Update is in Progress with a progress bar at the
bottom.
6. After the update(s) are complete a dialog box will appear informing you that the update process is
complete.

Resolving modem software errors:

1. If the update image is not on the USB stick, an Error dialog box will indicate that the modem driver(s)
cannot be found. Other errors may occur as well (ERROR 2) (ERROR 6). If either error occurs, power
the HST3000(C) off and remove the Broadcom SIM. Inspect the micro-connector on the HST3000(C)
for any evidence of damage pins or bent blades which would require repair service. If no evidence of
connector damage on the HST3000(C) or Broadcom SIM is seen, reseat the module making sure the lip
at the top of the SIM gets inserted first before folding the Broadcom SIM onto the HST3000(C). If the
error is seen again and the luxury of having a known good HST3000(C) and Broadcom SIM are
available, swap SIMs between the two units and see if the error tracks with the HST3000(C) or the
Broadcom SIM.
