Activity No. 2. Reflection, Refraction, and Polarization

Directions: Answer the following questions involving Reflection, Refraction, and

Polarization. Show your solution and box your final answer.

1. Two smooth reflecting surfaces (A and B) are

perpendicular to each other. Light strikes
surface A at a point 12 cm from the point of
intersection of surfaces A and B. If the angle
of incidence 𝜃1 = 30°, how far from the point
of intersection of the two surfaces will the
reflected light from surface A strike surface
B?

Hint: Apply trigonometry (trigonometric functions) to find out the length of surface B.
Show your solution and answer.

2. In the figure, material a is water and material b

is glass with index of refraction 1.52. The incident
ray makes an angle of 60.0° with the normal; find
the direction (angle) of the refracted ray.

Hint: Use Snell’s law to find the value of 𝜃𝑏

Show your solution and answer.
3. Unpolarized light with an intensity of 𝐼0=20𝑚𝑊2 is incident on a pair of polarizers.
The first polarizer has its transmission axis aligned at 50° from the vertical. The
second polarizer has its transmission axis aligned at 20° from the vertical. Prove that:
a. The intensity of the light when it emerges from the first polarizer, 𝐼1 is 10 mW2.

b. The intensity of the light when it emerges from the second polarizer, 𝐼2 is 7.5
Hints:
Remember that when an unpolarized light passes through an ideal polarizer,
𝐼𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 2. Malus’s Law is also used for this problem.
