Understanding 3 point lighting

What is 3 point lighting? - 3 point lighting involves three different light sources placed in three
different positions.

When is it most commonly used? - 3 point lighting is commonly used in interviews at a head
shot or close up to create depth in the shots and set the focus on the character and enhance
their appearance and mood.

What are the names of the 3 lights in the setup? - key light, fill light and back light.

What is is their purpose -


The key light - this is the main source of light in this setup, it is usually placed at a 20 - 45
degree angle from the subject.
The fill light - this light fills out the shadows on the subject and reduces contrast and
creates even lighting, this is usually about 50% of the key lights power.
The back light - this light is placed behind the subject and is directed to them to create
separation from the background.
