QUESTION

In its WEDNESDAY, 30 AUGUST 2023 issue, Botswana’s newspaper THE

MIDWEEK SUN reported, as follows:

“Ceasefire in schools as teachers down the stick

Teachers have resolved to stop using the stick on school children as punishment,
but have decided to leave the chore to school heads who will henceforth be the
only ones to use corporal punishment. This is a resolution taken at the recent
teacher union’s conference after about three teachers were in the headlines recently
for their use of corporal punishment at their respective schools. What has actually
irked teachers is the fact that in all of these court cases for the said teachers, no
parent had complained, something that teachers feel is dangerous as their own
employer was instead of protecting them, throwing them to the lions. With so
many students in schools and with the plethora of misconduct cases across classes,
it would be interesting to see how school heads will cope with beating up the little
rascals.”
