WEAVING LANDSCAPES

These paintings are abstract landscapes of my life. In a world of mass production they
celebrate the touch of the human hand and the art of making slowly . They celebrate
memories and motherhood and the endless moulding and weaving evolved in the
process. They celebrate Hong Kong a city I have loved intensely for her contrasts, beauty
and diversity. Each painting is a memory and a feeling.

Working in abstraction the materials themselves become salient. The artworks made of
silk, linen and thread are tactile. Each colour, mark and stitch is intentional and
accumulate into traces of the journey, which form the work. The circle is a dominant
form - being the shape of tea bowls, the earth and moon, it’s endless and inspiring
because of its powerful simplicity. Using ink and water soluble oils I give the paint
freedom to move. With uidity I improvise and invite chance and the accidental to tell a
story. The translucent layers emit light from within. They encapsulate many of the
elements I marvel at through my camera lens, including light, shadows, patinated rocks,
delicate spider webs, and forms and patterns of all kinds found in the nature surrounding
me. The ceramics, the random weaving and the stitching form layers, like that of our
human experience.

The exhibition is a celebration of the very essence of making with our hands because life
is a journey and a creative process. The only meaning that truly exists is the one we
make for ourselves.
