Class: BCA Semester: I

Subject: Discrete Mathematics Paper Code: 101

Learning Objective
Learners able to understand the techniques of sets
Learners enable to understand the techniques of reasoning
Section A
1. If R & S are equivalence relations in a set A. Then examine that (R∩S)-1 is also an equivalence
relation?
2. Verify Demorgan’s law for propositions & examine the statement
p (qvr) = (p  q) v(p  r)
3. (a) The sports club of IITM awarded 38 medals in badminton, 15 in table tennis and 20 to
chess. If these medals went to a total of 58 students and only three got medals in all the three
sports. How many received medals in exactly two of these sports?
(b) If n(A) = 40, n(B) = 30, n(A∩B) = 20. Then find n(AUB)
4. If A, B and C are any three sets then prove or disprove that:
(i) A-(B∩C) = (A-B) U (A-C), (ii) AX(BUC) = (AXB) U(AXC)
5. Write the contrapositive, converse, and inverse of the conditional statement
“The Indian Cricket wins when Sachin Tendulakar Scores 100”
6. (A) Test the validity of arguments
If I do all the exercises in this chapter, I will understand the material. If I understand the
material. I will do on the exam. If I do well on the exam, I will pass. I passed the exam.
Therefore, I did all the exercises in this chapter.
(B) Write the Negation of the following statements
a) If you do not drive 60mph then you will not get a speeding ticket.
b) You can take the flight If and only if you will buy a ticket.
7. (a) Draw the truth table for If p implies q, q implies, p implies r.
(b) If R = {(x, y) ∈ x+ y divides 24, x, y ∈A}; A ={1, 3,5} then find R-1 R2 MR draw
diagraph
8. A) Examine the validty of argument using following premises and conclusion: p→~q,
r→p, q; ~r
B) Find the domain and range of following functions: (i) f(x) = x/(x+1) (ii) f(x) =
cosecx.
9. Consider the following table: p: Today is Tuesday; q: It is raining. r: It is cold.
Write in simple sentences the meaning of the following:
(i) ~q =˃ (r ˄ q) (ii) (p ˅ r) ↔ r
10. Negation of ∃x ˅y P(x,y) is …………………

7. Let f : A → B and g : B → C be two mappings such that both f and g are invertible then show
that (i) gof is also invertible. (ii) (gof)-1 = f-1og-1.
8. Let f, g be functions from N to N (set of natural numbers) for n𝜖 N such that f(n) = n+1, g(n)
= 2n. Find fog and gof
