Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not popular in
many places? And how to increase its popularity?
*Task
One reason for the lack of popularity of cycling is the lack of cycling
infrastructure in many places. Many cities and towns do not have designated bike lanes or
cycling paths, which makes it difficult and unsafe for cyclists to travel on the roads
alongside cars and buses. Additionally, some people may perceive cycling as a leisure
activity rather than a practical mode of transportation, which may also limit its popularity.
To increase the popularity of cycling, some measures can be taken. One of the
most effective measures is the creation of more cycling infrastructure. This includes the
development of bike lanes, cycling paths, and other facilities that make cycling safer and
more convenient for people. By providing designated routes for cyclists, more people
may feel encouraged to take up cycling as a mode of transportation. Another way to
increase the popularity of cycling is to promote it as a healthy and eco-friendly option.
Governments and local authorities can launch public awareness campaigns to promote
cycling as a practical mode of transportation that is good for both health and the
environment. These campaigns can include information on the benefits of cycling, as well
as advice on how to cycle safely. Finally, employers can also play a role in promoting
cycling by providing facilities for employees who cycle to work. This could include bike
parking, changing rooms, and showers. By promoting cycling as an alternative to driving,
businesses can help to reduce their carbon footprint while also encouraging employees to
be more active and healthy.
