• Starting with v7.0.130, VxRail no longer validates the customer-supplied vCenter server SW version
compatibility with the VxRail SW version on the cluster. Go to dell.com/support/kbdoc/000520355 to
confirm that your customer-supplied vCenter server is upgraded to the minimum compatible version
before initiating the installation of the cluster and before adding a new node to the cluster.
• The version of the new node to be added must be listed in the VxRail Node Addition Matrix
(https://dl.dell.com/content/docu92203_VxRail_Appliance_Node_Addition_Matrix.pdf).
• The new node software version is listed in the packing slip shipped with the node.
• Adding Quanta nodes to a cluster is not supported.
• AMD-based VxRail nodes cannot be mixed with any Intel-based VxRail nodes in the same cluster.
• Starting with v4.7.300, the new node is upgraded to the cluster version during the node add process.

a. Locate the Ethernet port used to connect the iDRAC to your IT management network.
b. Locate the Ethernet ports on the Network Daughter Card (NDC). These Ethernet ports are built
into the rear of the node.
c. Check if any PCIe slots are populated with an optional Ethernet adapter card.

Task 2: Determine if predefined or custom network topology

Depending on the VxRail version being deployed, and your requirements, the topology between the
VxRail nodes and adjacent top-of-rack switches can be either a predefined network profile automated
during VxRail initial build, or a custom network topology that requires specific instructions.
• If a predefined network profile is selected, confirm with the solutions architect the number and type of
Ethernet ports on each node that are to be reserved for VxRail networking and create a connectivity
map between the VxRail node ports and adjacent top-of-rack switches.
• If a custom network design and topology is selected, request the connectivity map agreed to by the
solutions architect.

Note: See the captured VxRail settings as needed for the port assignments on the top-of-rack
switches. Plugging into any available port does not guarantee network connectivity.

Task 3: Create mapping between node ports and switch ports for predefined network profile
Note: Skip this task if the network connectivity mapping will not match a pre-defined network profile, and
instead will be a custom network profile.

1. [ ] Determine whether one switch, two switches or four switches will be supporting the VxRail
cluster networks.
2. [ ] Determine which ports on the top-of-rack switch(es) in the data center rack will be used for
connecting the ports on the VxRail nodes to support the required VxRail networks.
3. [ ] Determine whether two ports or four ports per node will be used to support VxRail networking.
• If two Ethernet ports are to be reserved for the required VxRail networks, then only the NDC ports
are connected to support VxRail networking. If there are four ports on the NDC, then use the two
left-most NDC ports.
• If four Ethernet ports are to be reserved for the required VxRail networks, and the network speed is
10 Gb Ethernet, then the four NDC Ethernet ports are connected to support VxRail networking.
• If four Ethernet ports are to be reserved for the required VxRail networks, and the network speed is
25 Gb Ethernet, the two 25 Gb NDC ports and the two 25 Gb ports in the first PCIe slot are
connected for VxRail networking.
4. [ ] Create a mapping from the VxRail node ports to the appropriate switch ports.
• For a single switch, create mapping of either two Ethernet cables or four Ethernet cables to the
switch.

Figure 3. Connections for 2 NDC ports or 4 NDC ports to a single switch

• For a dual-switch deployment with two Ethernet ports on the NDC reserved for the required VxRail
networks, map one cable into the first switch, and the second cable into the second switch.

• For a dual-switch deployment with four Ethernet ports on the NDC reserved for the required VxRail
networks, map the cables from NDC ports 0 and 2 into the first switch, and map the cables from
NDC ports 1 and 3 into the second switch.

Figure 4. Connections for 2 NDC ports or 4 NDC ports to dual switches

• For a dual-switch deployment with two 10Gb Ethernet ports on the NDC and two 10Gb Ethernet
ports on the PCIe adapter reserved for the required VxRail networks, map the cables from NDC
port 0 and PCIe card port 0 into the first switch, and map the cables from NDC port 1 and PCIe
card port 1 into the second switch.
• For a dual-switch deployment with two 25Gb Ethernet ports on the NDC and two 25Gb Ethernet
ports on the PCIe adapter reserved for the required VxRail networks, map the cables from NDC
port 0 and PCIe card port 1 into the first switch, and map the cables from NDC port 1 and PCIe
card port 0 into the second switch.

Figure 5. Connections for 2 NDC ports and 2 PCIe ports to dual switches

Task 4: Create mapping between node ports and switch ports for a custom network
In a custom network topology, the deployment does not align with a predefined network profile and you
can select any ports on the node to use for the VxRail networks. The mapping document should connect
a specific port on each node with a specific switch port.
• Two or four ports per node are required to support VxRail networking.

Figure 6. Sample custom connectivity options

• You can select any combination of NDC ports and PCIe ports, so long as they are all running the
same network speed and the same network port type.
• A deployment with four switches is supported. For this deployment, each node port will plug into a
top-of-rack switch.

Task 5: Verify network passage for a dual switch deployment

1. [ ] Verify network passage between the switches.
2. [ ] IPV6 multicast traffic is forwarded between the two switches.

Note: See the vendor’s documentation that came with the switches for the precise configuration
details to enable network passage.

Figure 8. Enabling network passage between the two switches

Task 6: Connect cabling between nodes and your data center

Note: Repeat the steps in this task for all of the VxRail nodes.

1. [ ] Plug the power cords into the power supplies and connect these cords to AC power sources.
2. [ ] Connect the Ethernet cables from each VxRail node to your network using the mapping created
between the node ports and the switch ports.
3. [ ] Connect the Ethernet cable from the iDRAC management port on each VxRail node to the
designated management switch.

Note: The designated management switch can either be a physical Ethernet switch separate from the
top-of-rack switches, or you can use ports on the top-of-rack switches, provided the switches are
compatible.

Task 7: Enable network connectivity to VxRail Manager

1. [ ] Verify the VxRail external management VLAN and the IP address of VxRail Manager.

Note: The default VxRail Manager IP address is 192.168.10.200, and the default VLAN for the VxRail
external management network is the default (untagged) VLAN.

2. [ ] Determine the method to connect to VxRail Manager.

• If connectivity is enabled by connecting a laptop to a port on one of the top-of-rack switches, the
switch port must be correctly configured to access VxRail external management network VLAN.
• If connectivity is enabled by a jump host upstream from the top-of-rack switches, the upstream
network must be configured to enable connectivity to VxRail Manager through a browser.

Note: Skip the next step if you will provide a jump host for VxRail Manager access.

3. [ ] Configure the laptop to enable network connectivity to the VxRail Manager IP address.
4. [ ] Connect the laptop to the designated port on the switch.

CAUTION: Do not power on the VxRail appliance until after you have confirmed the TOR switch
configuration is complete. See the VxRail Network Planning Guide for switch protocol requirements. See

Task 4: Preparation and single/multi-node addition

To perform this activity, you must have access to a management PC that can communicate with the
VxRail.
Notes:
• A Dynamic Node cluster with a Fibre Channel array requires a manual step to mount the primary
external storage to the additional node(s) before proceeding with the node addition operation.
• Turn off TPM before node addition and turn on TPM after node addition.
• If the VxRail Cluster that is configured with a VMware vCenter Server whose certificate management
mode is thumbprint, a host connection issue can occur. See KB 000205158 for detailed information to
avoid such issue before upgrading.
• The UI of a dynamic node cluster with a Fibre Channel array will not contain vSAN fields.
1. [ ] Connect to vSphere vCenter:

a. Connect your management PC to a port on the TOR switch supporting your VxRail install base.
b. Configure the management PC network address to one that is on the same subnet as the VxRail
and can communicate with VMware vSphere vCenter.
c. Launch a browser on the management PC.
d. Log in to the vSphere vCenter HTML5 UI with the administrator account and password.

Figure 35 Log in to VMware vCenter Server Plugin.

You are now connected to vCenter and can proceed to add the new to the cluster.

26. [ ] If the current VxRail Cluster is a HCI mesh cluster and uses a different vSAN subnet than
Remote vSAN Cluster vSAN subnet, perform the following extra manual steps:

Note: Before node expansion, you need to manually add vSAN traffic and vMotion traffic to other
existing configured nodes in HCI mesh cluster. Remote vSAN server cluster should be configured
properly on router to current VxRail HCI mesh cluster. The HCI mesh cluster mounting remote vSAN
datastore operation must be completed before node expansion.

a. Go to vCenter > Hosts and Clusters > VxRail-Datacenter > VxRail-Virtual-SAN-Cluster.

b. Click the newly added node.
c. Click Configure > System > Services.
d. Select SSH or ESXi Shell and click START to enable services.

If ESXi Shell service is enabled, you can log in to the new node command line using DCUI with
Alt+F1.
f. Log in to new configured node using the command line with root account.
g. Add a static route to the new node:
esxcli network ip route ipv4 add -n <Remote vSAN Cluster vSAN
Subnet>/<netmask_length> -g <HCI Mesh vSAN Gateway>
For example:
HCI Mesh Cluster uses vSAN traffic as 192.168.100.0/24 with Gateway 192.168.100.1.
The remote vSAN cluster vSAN traffic is in 192.168.200.0/24 subnet.
The following command will be run on the new node:
esxcli network ip route ipv4 add -n 192.168.200.0/24 -g 192.168.100.1
By default, the VxRail factory ships with TPM module enabled and SecureBoot disabled. After you
complete node addition, the host might not pass attestation. You can resolve the “Host Secure Boot was
disabled” problem by either enabling SecureBoot or disabling the TPM module to align with the rest of the
cluster.
