    Standing waves are formed when two waves traveling in opposite directions superimpose, or overlap. The points where the waves overlap constructively are called antinodes where there is a large oscillation. The points where the waves overlap destructively and cancel out are called nodes where the net oscillation is zero. Nodes and antinodes occur at regular intervals of half a wavelength apart from each other along the medium that supports the wave. This document provides a diagram of standing waves as an example of wave superposition.
