D. Discussing new concepts

Take a look at the presentation of book parts below. Read the

description of each part so that you will get to familiarize
yourself with it. You may hold your favorite book and identify
the parts discussed below.

1. FRONT COVER- the thick

colorful outer page, usually with
pictures and shows the title,
author/s, illustrators and publisher
of the book.

It tells the reader what the book is

about and it protects the pages of
the book.

Sometimes, the illustration on the

front cover extends to the back
cover.

2. COPYRIGHT PAGE – is the page

that tells you who owns the book,
where and when it was published,
and to whom to ask permission if
needed to copy a part of the book. It
is usually found on the inside cover
fronting the title page.

Copyright is a law that protects the

owner of the book from others who
want to copy the contents of the
book without asking permission.

3. TITLE PAGE- repeats the

information given on the cover,
provides the reader with
information about:
- title
- author or authors
- the publisher - company that
prints the book
- the publisher’s location

4. TABLE OF CONTENTS- the list

3
of the titles of the lessons or stories
in the book, and arranged by pages.

You can find this part on books that

have many topics or stories.

Not all books have table of

contents.

5. BODY- contains the different

stories or lessons found in the book.
It is the most important part of the
book.

In storybooks, this is the story

itself.

6. PAGE NUMBER - inside each

book is a page number found at
either corners of the book. All
books have page numbers to guide
the reader which page is next.

7. SPINE – is the best part that you

can see when the book is on the
shelf. The spine of a book helps
hold your book together and keep it
strong just like the spine in your
body does! It is the backbone of the
book.
Not all books have spine. Very thin
books do not have spines.

8. ILLUSTRATOR – person who

draws the pictures. The drawings or
illustrations that he or she makes
give life to the story and make it
appealing to the eyes of the readers.

4
9. AUTHOR – person who writes the
book. It can be found in the cover
or title page together with the
Illustrator of the book.

In a storybook, the author uses his

creativity and imagination in
writing a very good story.

10. GLOSSARY – is a list of

important words from the book
and their meanings.

This is the mini dictionary that can

be found at the back of the book.

Usually, reference and textbooks

have their glossary. Children
storybooks don’t have glossary.

11. INDEX – this is the alphabetical

list of chapters. It is usually found
at the back of the book. Each list
indicates subtopics and page
numbers where the topics appeared
in the book.

Common storybooks don’t have

index, only reference or textbooks
have it.

what you have now is a storybook, maybe not. If you are
holding your English textbook, maybe it is a yes!
