What Is Motion
What Is Motion
An automobile moving at a rate of forty km per hour cannot pass another automobile going in the same direction at the same speed because they do not change their position with respect to each other although they are both changing their position with respect to the earth. Both automobiles are in motion with respect to the earth, but neither automobile is in motion with respect to the other. How far or how close a body has been displaced is better understood when its covered distance and the direction to which it was moved are given.Distance ,d, is the length of path traveled by a body .It is a scalar quantity, and so its direction is not significant.Specifying the direction to which a body was moved and the distance it has covered is giving its pisplacement.Displacement,d, is the shiortest distance from the initial to the final position of a body.It is a quantity whose direction is significant and so is classified a vector quantity.
