ES-26 DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

Problem Set 2

Date Given: September 17, 2023 Date Due: September 25, 2023

Instructions: Use 4-4 size bond paper. Copy and Solve the following problems neatly. Submit an Electronic copy of
your work on or before the due.

1. A motorist is traveling at 54 km/h when she observes that a traffic light 240 m ahead of her turns red. The
traffic light is timed to stay red for 24 seconds. If the motorist wishes to pass the light without stopping just
as it turns green again, determine the required uniform deceleration of the car and the speed of the car as it
passes the light.

2. The initial velocity v0 of a hockey puck is 105 mi/h. Determine (a) the largest value (less than 45°) of the angle
alpha for which the puck will enter the net and (b) the corresponding time required for the puck to reach the
net.

3. The track for this racing event was designed so that riders jump off the slope at 30ᴼ, from a height of 1m.
During a race, it was observed that the rider shown in the figure remained in midair for 1.5 sec. Determine
(a) the speed at which he was traveling off the ramp, (b) the horizontal distance he traveled before striking
the ground, and (c) the maximum height he attained.

4. Determine the maximum height on the wall to which the firefighter can project water from the hose if the
speed of the water at the nozzle is 48 ft./s.

5. Determine the horizontal velocity 𝜈𝐴 of a tennis ball at A so that it just clears the net at B. Also,
find the distance s where the ball strikes the ground and the time the ball has traveled from A to B.

6. The ball is kicked from point A with the initial velocity VA = 10 m/s. Determine the range R, and
the speed when the ball strikes the ground.

7. A ball is dropped from a boat so that it strikes the surface of a lake with a speed of 16.5 ft/s. While
in the water the ball experiences an acceleration of a = 10 − 0.8v, where a and v are expressed in
ft/s2 and ft/s, respectively. Knowing the ball takes 3 s to reach the bottom of the lake, determine (a)
the depth of the lake, (b) the speed of the ball when it hits the bottom of the lake.

8. Three seconds after automobile B passes through the intersection shown, automobile A passes
through the same intersection. Knowing that the speed of each automobile is constant, determine
(a) the relative velocity of B with respect to A, (b) the change in position of B with respect to A during
a 4-s interval, (c) the distance between the two automobiles 2 s after A has passed through the
intersection.
