    There are three main variables in an experiment: the independent variable which is what can be changed, the dependent variable which is what is observed and measured, and controlled variables which are kept the same. For example, in an experiment testing how different surfaces affect the time a toy car takes to travel down a slope, the independent variable would be the type of surface, the dependent variable would be the time taken, and controlled variables would include the height, car, and measurement units.
