REviviFY - VRLA Case Study
NO OF 2V, 1500Ah
Cells
Inward - 284
Outward - 103
Leading PSU broadband service provider -Initial Observations
1. 364 nos of 2V, 1500Ah VRLA cells (YOM- 2018) were available with customer which formed 2
banks of 360V, 1500Ah capacity.
2. The cells were providing backup power to 2 No’s 160kVA UPS.
3. Only 1 battery bank was found functional (180 cells)
4. 1 year before discussing with ASPL, the customer had been scavenging the cells from the 2nd
bank and utilizing them in 1st bank when cells were found to be failing.
5. ASPL engineers checked the internal resistance of all the 364 cells. It was found to be very
high. Hence, it could be inferred that the cells had heavy sulphation and failing grid. This was
the cause of low backup and probable failure when sudden load was getting applied.
6. Only 284 cells were found to be suitable for possible revival, if the negative grids were able to
hold good during revival process.
1. The average backup time of all the assessed 284 cells was only 68 minutes, when
discharged at 150A.
2. The average internal resistance of the 284 cells was 2.59 mΩ (Preferred <1.5 mΩ,
ideal < 1 mΩ)
3. The average specific gravity of all the 284 cells was 1134.
Nomenclature for VRLA cell assessment
All the 284 cells were REvviFY’ed and discharged multiple times at C10 rating, 150A. The cell performances were
assessed with following nomenclature
B. Internal Resistance
1. Green : < 1.5 mΩ
2. Orange : > 1.5 mΩ
C. Specific Gravity
1. Orange : < 1200
2. Green : > 1200
Post REviviFY VRLA data (All cells)
1. The average backup time of all the assessed 284 cells increased from 68 minutes to
304 minutes , when discharged at 150A.
2. The average specific gravity of all the 284 cells increased from 1134 to 1230
3. The average internal resistance of the 284 cells decreased from 2.59 mΩ to 1.13 mΩ
Post REviviFY VRLA data (Only Excellent, Very Good &
Average cells – 103 no’s)
103 cells were found to be restored to the best performance (3 to 11 hours) when discharged multiple times.
1. The average backup time of all the 103 cells increased from 124 minutes to 478 minutes, when
discharged at 150A.
2. The average specific gravity of the 103 cells increased from 1129 to 1239
3. The average internal resistance the 103 cells decreased from 1.29 mΩ to 0.80 mΩ
Summary
A 2V 1500Ah lead acid cell has a capacity of 3.0 kWh. So, the carbon footprint of manufacturing this battery
would be between 450 and 600 kilograms of CO2. 103 nos very good cells were rejuvenated and
restored to customer.
TOTAL CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCED = 103 no’s X 450 kgs (min) = 46350 kg
NOTE:
The transportation of the battery also contributes to its carbon footprint. The battery will need to be transported from the mine to
the processing plant, and then from the processing plant to the battery manufacturer. This transportation will release emissions
into the air.
*Transport Carbon footprint has not been taken into account in the above calculation
