Equations & Inequalities

Total Marks: 20
(20 = Platinum, 18 = Gold, 16 = Silver, 14 = Bronze)

1. Solve the simultaneous equations

𝑥+𝑦 =2
4𝑦 2 − 𝑥 2 = 11

(7)

2. The equation 𝑘𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + (5 − 𝑘) = 0, where k is a constant, has 2 different real solutions for x.

(a) Show that k satisfies

𝑘 2 − 5𝑘 + 4 > 0

(3)

(b) Hence find the set of possible values of k.

(4)

3. A gardener is planning the design for a rectangular flower bed. The requirements are:

• the length of the flower bed is to be 3 m longer than the width,

• the length of the flower bed must be at least 14.5 m,
• the area of the flower bed must be less than 180 m 2 .

The width of the flower bed is 𝑥 m.

By writing down and solving appropriate inequalities in 𝑥 , determine the set of possible values for
the width of the flower bed.

1. Either Or

y 2 = 4 − 4x + x 2 x2 = 4 − 4y + y2
M1

4(4 − 4 x + x 2 ) − x 2 = 11
4 y 2 − (4 − 4 y + y 2 ) = 11
M1
or 4 y − (2 − y) = 11
2 2
or 4(2 − x) 2 − x 2 = 11

3x 2 − 16x + 5 = 0 3 y 2 + 4 y − 15 = 0 Correct 3 terms A1

(3 x − 1)( x − 5) = 0, x = ...
(3 y − 5)( y + 3) = 0, y = ... M1

2 (a) b 2 − 4ac  0  16 − 4k ( 5 − k )  0 or equiv., e.g. 16  4k (5 − k ) M1A1

So k 2 − 5k + 4  0 (Allow any order of terms, e.g. 4 − 5k + k 2  0 ) (*) A1cso
