2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Charcoal?

Erasing ( ) 1. To show movement, use your finger to smudge some of the
shadows in the direction that the object is moving. Do this as if
you were painting with your finger, using single strokes.

Dark tones ( ) 2. Snap your charcoal stick and use the sharp edge to add
final small details, such as details of the face or patterns.

Tonal drawing ( ) 3. To remove some of the charcoal, you can use cloth, your
hand or an eraser. This will create highlights and will give form to
your drawing.

Smudging ( ) 4. To add darker tones to your drawing, snap the end of your
charcoal stick. Use the broad edge to draw tone in one stroke.
Details ( ) 5. To create a smooth transition between the shadow areas and
the light areas, lighter marks can be added and blended.
